I was offered a credit-limit increase by my credit card bank several times. Each time, I will need to reply an SMS or call the bank to accept the offer. I believe the offer is legit.

What I'm wondering is why isn't the limit increased automatically and that I have to "accept" the offer?

The fact that it wasn't automatic probably means there are pros and cons for both sides. My guesses:

For individual:
- Pro: Extra credit limit.
- Con: Affects credit score? (do we have one in Malaysia?)

For the bank:
- Pro: Entices clients to pay more via credit.
- Con: Potential debt by clients? (but bank would get more interest anyway)

Should I just accept it as a "just in case" buffer for the future? Or perhaps it's just a scam?

The bank just want you to spend more with their card and highly charges financial fees on that. Nothing wrong la.

Next time if they call again you can request for card cancellation if they call agian for increase limit. haha.

Hijack the thread a bit. I make roughly RM20k net per month (admittedly I work in SG), but StanChart Malaysia refused to raise my credit card's credit limit of RM6K, even after I submitted my past 3 month's payslips. I have been using this card since 2012 and have never missed a payment. Any reason why?

Yes, I have 2 mortgages. Again I have never missed any payment to these 2 mortgages. I should be a good paymaster in their eyes with low credit risk, yet my credit limit is pathetically low. Even my SG credit card gives me higher credit limit, currency conversion notwithstanding.

What I guess is it's not about the payment on time or not but your mortgages loans amount are affecting the credit limit. That's why SG cc higher limit because they don't have your mortgage loan records in Singapore.

Weird indeed. I got RM12k limit when I was a fresh-grad, but without house loans. Depends on bank, I guess?

I guess your reasoning makes sense. Guess I would try to get a second credit card then.

Ok, so seems like it's safe to just accept it without any cons on the client side.

Still, it's weird that they can't just update it in their system if it's win-win situation.

Its not a bad thing if u don't abuse the limit and can afford to pay on time.
