As title stated, do you write your own songs when you're in a band?
or just play cover and that's it?

I'm joining a battle of the band, but each band must at least have 1 original in order to join.
so we're having a hard time now.

every riff we can get is not as nice. doh.gif

if you do, can give some ideas or guide on how to make nice riff ?

thanks.

Brother, just tune to drop D and have fun. Seriously, i came up with lots of cool riffs like that. Add in some palm mutes and pinch harmonics to accentuate a part of the riff, and there you have it. *

ermm. . . well ASIDE from the EPIC stuff. . . lol

do you have theory basics? if you do start with your singers key. . . then work around it. . .

if you want super basic pop songs go for the I-IV-V-I or I-V-I-IV or any of those basic simple formulas. . .

if you play in Drop-D then play in D major / minor. . . simple =)

words just talk about dragons and stuff. . . try adding Puteri Gunung Ledang and The Mighty Dragon or something along those lines. ..

if you want to show INTELLECTUALISM then play in odd time signatures. . . NO 4 4. . .if you wanna play in 4 4 play a 3 4 to a 5 4 xD (Prog Metal rules)

cheers xD

practically. . . you take the key

for example Key of C:

C D E F G A B C

I II III IV V VI VII oct

then just arrange according to the numbers. . . there are basic set formulas for certain genres of music. . .

Jazz uses alot of II-V-I and so on so forth. . .

with that you can start to play with modes as each number represents a mode. . .

and from there you can expand sommore. . . lol

well as i said this is basic? he is asking for basic (making riffs) =.=

haven't even added the maj min min maj maj min dim formula. . .

also in jazz and what not you play 11 and 13 chords. . . which of course is non really important for now. . .

don't forget. . . the Power Metal rule. . . Power Metal = Power Chords =P

for the theory. . . look for books that touch on theory only. . . where it be jazz rock metal or whatnot. . . they all revolve around the same formula. . . my knowledge is from reading books. . .

just drop by harmony or something and get a few. . . they have quite a number of good books there that can cover different levels. . .

Warcraft got ripp off DnD also 1 xD

DnD is like the one that started all them fantasy stuff xD

I always thought BOTBs were popularity contests. Just play the most popular crowd favourite song and you're halfway there. Good luck getting crowd support with original songs bub!

I think it depends on what the judges want, if the marking sheets have "technique" "tightness" "sound balancing", then this BotB should be more focused on the band itself. Saw some BotB that have "audience appeal" "originality" "creativity" "appearance", obviously it is for bands that look good only, with mediocre skills also can win.

lol..i think looking good on stage , showmanship , appearance , choosing the right cover for the right crowd has its own difficulties lor ..

there are mainly 2 parties you need to satisfy

1.Crowd
2.Judge

3.yourself/band (which seldom happens)

..most of the cover song..either satisfy the "crowd only" ..but not the judges..
some ..satisfy the judges ..not the crowd..

its difficult getting Both sides..

thats why a good medly..is quite a good idea

reminds me of 1 of the battle of the bands i joined during high school time..

one of the band (metal band ) ..asked their fans to "mosh" to their music..
the crowd loved it ...the judges walked away..

Don't get me wrong, I never implied that to look good on stage is easy, was just trying to describe what kinda BotBs there are. We've entered some BotBs that focused on the more technical aspect of performing on stage, and saw that the judges are looking for bands that can actually play, appearances are not as important to them; on the other hand, there are judges in other BotBs that know nothing of band-music, and tried to comment on the bands, American-Idol-style, those are just plain idiotic, but then again, can't blame them la, who doesn't want to make money?

Honestly, I can only think of Asian Beat that has these two aspects in balance.
