Coordinating Minister Luhut also suggested that the Indonesian government need to buy a new ship size 138-140 meters frigate class.
tirto.id - The Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, said that Indonesia lacks ships to patrol the North Natuna Sea.
Luhut said that this was a case that needed to be addressed in responding to China's claim to the North Natuna Sea.
"Yes, if we don't attend, people attend. So we are actually the first to get angry at ourselves. We don't have enough ships, "Luhut said to reporters when met at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs, Friday (1/3/2019).
The Natuna Sea polemic began when China was considered to make a one-sided claim on the North Natuna Sea through the Nine Dash-Line issued by the country. Through this map, China recognizes the North Natuna Sea as part of its territory both land and water.
In December 2019, Chinese naval vessels appeared at the border of North Natuna waters. Their position was later found to be illegally entered.
From the results of his talks with President Joko Widodo, Luhut claimed the government would increase domestic ship production. He explained that Indonesian Navy ships would be added more.
"Now the president has ordered today to build more of our ships, our coast guard to patrol," Luhut said.
Luhut also suggested that Indonesia needs to buy a new ship size 138-140 meters frigate class.
He said during Indonesia's independence, this type of ship had never been owned.
He said this he had communicated with the Minister of Defense, Prabowo Subianto. "And I suggested that there be a larger ocean going ship. We have never had it as long as this republic was independent. So right now the one who was with Pak Bowo, wants to buy the 138-140 meter frigate, "said Luhut.
When asked where the ship would be bought from, Luhut could not confirm it.
He handed it over to Prabowo both in terms of price and the origin of the producing country. To be sure, he planned if the ship could be purchased this year.
"This year [buy] I think so," said Luhut.
