i personally feel that getting the IR is definitely not necessary if you DO NOT plan to be one of the following:

1) civil engineer
2) consultant engineer (mostly in electrical field)

being a professional engineer (PE) means you have the authority to sign blueprints/floorplans, in which you will be held responsible for if there are any defects/failures/problems.

strictly speaking, only a civil engineer who will approve building floorplans & a consultant electrical engineer who needs to verify the circuit designs will need to be a qualified PE, and mind you they carry heavy responsibility for it.

if you are just an engineer in manufacturing factory/service engineer/sales engineer it is not necessary to be a qualified PE as you would not be required to approve any designs that involve public safety.
