i usually short ride (40km) je...
of cos when needed i will put in a bike light ...

for a 100km lets say 30km/hr (as a standard), it will takes approx 3:30hr - 4hr without having a break...
logically speaking, if we plan our time correctly, we can be in within day light at all time.

definition of a "longer ride" is very subjective geh,
example, if u ride audex style, then yes bring more is always better.
But for 100km ride which is i think is still within acceptable distance, carrying a minimal is sufficient.

i m using tubeless, hence i can choose not to bring any tubes, if shit happens, grab is my only option. cos i do not wana spend 1hr in a mess, rather grab.
i only carry a multitool just to realign my disc brakes if needed.

think of on another way,
possible if u reduce some saddle bag weight u can reach avg of 31km/hr  flex.gif
*

u wont know shxt will happened next.
I experienced tyre puncture for 2 times for less than 50km ride only. I even carry emergency patching in case all spare tubes used.
I am the kind to avoid take grab if possible, who know the areas you went to have no GSM / 4G network at all at certain corners.

#tubeless has its perks  brows.gif
well of cos none of us wana hail a grab to spoil all the fun in cycling, but when shxt happens, it happens.
*

that why i always ride will full loads as usual and 2x water bottles if possible even for short ride. I don't focus ride fast but instead ride safe.
who know used to ride without loads, light weight and suddenly cannot take the pace for long ride bcos extra loads.

unless u heading for unknown destinations, it is always good to bring more.
a planned trip enable us to ride efficiently.
usually it would just takes 2-5km to get used to the bike condition.

heavier weight will definitely slows down the pace logically.
*

I managed to hit 30km/h average speed with old road bike before heavy rain pour
Solo, No Stop, No Water for 50km. this the way how I load myself.

full carbon road bike, full ultegra groupset, 3 months old
30.1km/h
https://www.strava.com/activities/6339937316

full alloy road bike, full tiagra groupset, 7 years old
30.1km/h (before thru heavy rain), 29.2km/h (after thru heavy rain when last 5km)
https://www.strava.com/activities/6382544422

So I would say, is depend on yourself whether can ride faster or not, your bicycle wont help you improve significantly.
Hence, I always swap between alloy bike and carbon bike, so that i know how far I improved day to day.

Wow... Good that u can see urself Improving...

Imo, if both bike are the same weight n profile, it won be much different..
It will b a better ride quality on the carbon...

Dun mind me asking wat r those both bikes weight in?

Meanwhile...
In the world of aerodynamics, weights does not matter, but the bike profile does.

Anyways I m not that fast... I santai rider who just trying to be fast, 😜
*

total weight differences about around 1.5kg
but still, compare RM2k alloy rb and RM8k carbon rb. Both of results are not big differences.
So those rb cost RM20k-60k, i have no idea. sweat.gif

honestly, I hvn try to ride a alloy bike to compare the difference with my current performance...

from what I know, every bikes has its limit... It is possible tat u hv reached the peak performance of ur carbon bike... Tat s y u felt the same 😎... It is a calling for a NBD
*

alloy bike will much softer like normal family car as the frame are flex enough.
much comfortable to ride but harder to control. so it can train your reflex and focus.

QUOTE(geno @ Dec 15 2021, 10:31 AM)
Good on you if you feel motivated to ride more, but dont get sooo into numbers is my advise..  and please drink water, its bad for your kidneys
*

simply want to physco my brain that dont instruct my body to ease down for a rest when running short of food and water. You wont know when is your next tough ride that will forcing u to drink much water till you cant find somewhere to refill. sweat.gif Hence I even purposely skip some famous landmark too like Starbuck so that I can convince myself continue to ride with higher motivation.

now my main challenge is the hot sun which can drain my power easily
My brain keep asking me to get rest every 7-10km. sweat.gif

I would say constantly sip on water if its a hot day. If you wait till you are thirsty its too late. Long rides usually target 1 bottle per hour.

You want your body to perform, you need to give your body the resources it needs. Same with food or more specifically carbs, you dont diet on the bike.. you give your body the resources it needs to perform. With proper recovery it can adapt to your training.
*

I will feed my body with full resources when it is serious ride
Feed when santai ride is different, don't feel that my body asked me to stop when latest ride to KLIA for 100km as forced to slow down bcos my buddy bonk half way.

But I can felt improved compare to earlier ride to KLIA same route, that time I forced to stop 3-4 times for the last 30km for drink and rest. Latest ride to KLIA, yeah I can feel my body allowing for 1-2 stops for last 30km.

My kind is “suffer first, relax later”, prepare for the worst always.
If there is serious ride, can adapt easily with external resources.

n
takes all medals = 50 + 100km ?

Dont mind me asking, have u ridden in a bike event before?
*

I only aiming for finisher only

QUOTE(geno @ Dec 17 2021, 11:35 AM)
Whats your definition of a serious ride though? Race pace average 44kmh? I would suggest you to try riding at 1 of those regular Putrajaya night rides that usually average 43+km/h first though.

Its not just about cycling fitness but bike handling skills that most newbies nowadays lack terribly and brings alot of danger to yourself and to anyone closeby. As much as you think cycling as a sport that needs alot of physical fitness its also a sport that requires very good bike handling skill in the peloton. 30km/h is the usual low speed endurance pace, and tempo rides are usually above 35kmh average which can be riden 5-6hours. For your general info, almost every race the past couple years before MCO, all averages nothing less than 40km/h for over 160km. Even 43km/h avg for shorter 120-140km distances.

You need to realise this before jumping in to any race/events, not to discourage you but preparation and expectation is equally important. I'm speaking from experience riding and racing since 1990's
*

well, average speed. those speed you mentioned, is group speed or solo speed?
More pro cyclists in group, the faster of overall average speed, no doubt.
I much focus on the result of solo average speed as eliminated the possibility of the aid by other cyclists during the ride. I think nothing to debate here.

Like what i mentioned earlier, I got a fren average speed can get 32-33km/h stated in Strava which he should ride in group and keep chasing the tails...
While he ride solo or he left behind, average speed just about 25-27km/h... even I using 7 years lousy old rb can overtake his brand new rb easily... sweat.gif

Well, joining for event. I am no aiming for top speed or podium but more on participation and experiences, unlock another achievement and life milestone. Out there alot hidden tiger and dragon. As the bikecon event, it even allowed MTB and foldie, obviously it isn't a competition event.

QUOTE(radmaszeal @ Dec 17 2021, 03:04 PM)
yeah. but some serious groups use traffic lights as sprint sessions, got 1 ride tagged alone with strong mixed group coming back from kuala selangor, on jalan kuala selangor got a few traffic lights, each one had to sprint 400w for 30 seconds to not get dropped each time the lights turned green, no problems keeping up once cruising, but legs koyak cos of the accelerations, reach home legs gone lol. do solo ride definitely wont be doing 400w sprints at traffic lights lol.
*

I wont sprint in such manner at traffic light. Why traffic light located at the certain part of road for some reasons? It suppose to be high traffic section and why should sprint? who know you sprint but fell down on the road but the vehicles at the back no able to avoid... doh.gif

I only will do sprint at long stretch and quiet road such as around KLIA, my favorite route for cycling, I can sprint at the middle for road without worry anything. I tried solo 50km/h for 20-30sec right before the next checkpoint to test my max capabilities. Hence, highly recommend to use cleat shoe and pedal if planned to sprint to eliminate the possibility slipped away from pedal while full force, imagine your leg get cut by pedal and crankset or lost control while off saddle sweat.gif

Sprinting is just a part of a cycling discipline... Some love to surge... Riding in a group ride just may not satisfy their ride, so they will just sprint 1 or 2 times only for the sake of self satisfaction...
*

if want to sprint anywhere is fine, best is indoor trek where Azizul's competition areas. Best to avoid the high traffic road especially with traffic light and many road junctions, not to mention those kind of roads usually uneven and unsafe to sprint if didnt fully focus. or else ending up in news again with dead cyclists. sweat.gif

Hello, are there any group road rides around the Bangsar-area? I've been abroad for the past 8-years and will be home with my road bike for 45 days this Feb for CNY and am looking to get some riding in.

Here's my Strava summary and feel free to follow me for a follow back! https://www.strava.com/athletes/29486558

Thank you all and looking forward to meeting some fellow cyclists.

time attack as in u will go as fast as u can?
*

though just sungai lui there effected. but recheck again from waze, seem perez hill stretch also affected. hm. sweat.gif
or else i change route to KLIA instead for solo.

time attack more on solo till your max, rest as your personal needs.
no priority for group ride if slowing down our overall speed.

If event then yes need to wake up early for parking...
No event, sleep is more important. Ride fresh makes the ride more quality
*

do consider sleep early like 9pm before the ride day lo...

Still, i dont sleep much when last 120km ride but i still feel ease to push further... fresh air simply make my brain awake and less mental stress... biggrin.gif
same to my rest of my gang, they tried 430/500am to start ride even from rimbayu - tanjung sepat only sweat.gif
