To the developers of Celcom Life android app, why would you register such policy in your app?

Once they detect you want to migrate to Maxis, Digi or Umobile... the app will auto do factory reset as revenge

The hybrid framework is not even usable in some cases. How does a multimillion company able to do this is beyond me. The app itself is not native and crashes all the time.

Is this Android or IOS version? I don't think Android version has such permissions.

Not the usual permission approval you see when opening an app. Yes this is from android. This is registered through device administration API in Android SDK.

Though it doesn't directly ask a user to accept/deny this permission on app level, but the question is, why would they need this in the first place?

Well its celcom. Their website isn't mobile friendly up until 1-2 years ago. Their mobile app has gone through multiple refresh and rebrand with crappy non untuitive ui every time. Their network hasn't got volte and vowifi support yet while the underdogs umobile and yes4g got it for a few years already. They're the cimb of mobile telco.

Find my device has a tolerable reason.

But celcom telco app?
Digi, Maxis, Umobile, unifi apps did not need such permission to be usable.

Imagine your phone got stolen. You report it to Celcom and request them to reset your phone so that the thief won't be able access your sensitive data.

You what? Why would you report to Celcom (a non-trustable company) to reset your data? There's Find My Device built-in app for this purpose which is more trustable even if it's Google but reporting to Celcom doesn't make sense in this. It's a telco app fwiw.

True on that point. But if compared to celcom on other points they've already got mobile friendly site since few years already and i believe they've only refresh their mobile app once and both the old and new ones are okay-ish. Felt like celcom only outsourced to cronies co that hired freshgrads paid with peanuts wage doing half asses job.

Yes but I'm not saying Google is trusted, but I don't think it's safe to let companies/people to read your data.

I'd personally just use Find My Device as a single app to nuke my device as I've done so in the past when my phone got stolen.

Cheap or no cheap makes no difference. It's your personal data that is valuable to those companies, you should be aware of taking care of it.

Slightly unrelated but I wasted like rm60 on this shit app when I wanted to purchase extra rm20 data. All because on the page with the button to confirm the purchase, the app didn't redirect me back to the previous page although I clicked on the confirm button.

Turns out the network was slow and all three of my clicks registered as separate purchases. :X
Called them to complain and they politely told me to piss off.

Not sure if this is fixed or not.

Lol man report to mcmc lah. Got similar experience with them few years back. Got sms for promo reload rm10 got free rm10 so i reload rm10 and do got extra rm10. Turns out the promo got tnc that they failed to mentioned, got validity of 2 days only and will be forfeited. 2 days later the rm10 bonus credit do get forfeited, sure ok I don't mind the rm10 because its free in the first place even if they forgot to mention the validity. The best part is they also took my rm10 credit that i paid lol.

Asked their support forum about it and they admit they've fucked up their system. Asked for my rm10 to be refunded back but they also passive aggressively told me no. Called their cs but the girl also did the same thing even with "kalau incik nak report mcmc itu hak incik" when I mentioned mcmc. Got me really pissed off to file an online report at mcmc site, gave whole screenshot of the forum too showing how they've handled my enquiry. A week later got a call from celcom that they're refunding me back, plus apologizing for their sohainess. Felt gooding yo

That is what I call good apps. It probably will be 5 star if they concealed this feature and wipe your phone when u uninstalled it.

Just don't grant the right. And revoke if accidentally given one. Or completely uninstall.

They don't pay peanuts mind you. Last I know the company that developed their mobile app is a big Indian company (t*t* consult*****). I know because few years ago one of celcom's guy asked me to redevelop their app using native because they were pissed off already with this Indian company (fyi current app is hybrid which usually used only by cheapo development company).. But the problem is the backend too is developed by the same company and they kind of lock out access from others

Not only that, even our banking app CIMB and Maybank are not using native code for their apps. I'm forced to use it as there's no other alternatives. I am weirdly trusting web version even on mobile more than using their app because it looks cheap as hell.

That app is on top of react framework. The app is the first result of their first agile methodology. Iinm.

Are you sure they use react? Because when I check about 2 years ago, their backend was using ibm framework something iinm. And that framework provides a phonegap based mobile app framework to develop the matching mobile app. And I'm not familiar with react, but the code structure for their app is similar to phonegap. Anyways the performance of their app is terrible even by hybrid standard.

As much as we want to blame the company that developed this app, I think the majority of the blame should be put on the celcom team that accepts this vendor. Celcom should have specified that they want native apps and other specifications that should make the app perform better.

The problem with many big companies like celcom and cimb is they don't have in-house experienced developers. So they tend to believe everything the vendors told them. They should hire 2 or 3 experienced developers to become the project manager and not let everything handled by the vendor

What's the update on this?
