No more arts/science streams for Form Four next year
KUALA LUMPUR: The arts and science streams for Form Four will be scrapped next year.

Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching today said the government would replace it with more relevant subjects, including electives.

She said the arts and science streams would be replaced with STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Arts, Music) education.

She said a letter on the changes had been sent out to secondary schools nationwide.

“The letter/circular contains advice to schools across the country on how to encourage, evaluate and explain about the new subjects available from next year.

“This (the abolition of arts and science for Form 4 students) needs to be done according to the capabilities, availability, suitability (facilities/infrastructure), as well as considerations of each school,” she said at the Parliament lobby, today.

Streaming is the practice of sorting students into different “study path/direction” based on their intellectual capability and interest.

The streaming segregation at schools was based on the PT3 results. Students go into the Arts stream, choosing subjects like Accounting, Commerce, Economics, and Arts, or the Science stream, opting for subjects such as Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Additional Mathematics on top of the core subjects taught in schools.

However, earlier this year, Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik had proposed that a new educational approach had to be adopted by introducing more practical and career relevant subjects, matching students’ talents.

“We want schools to encourage students to choose a path or stream which they are keen on, so that they will excel in that subject.

“In the letter/circular we also explained on how the school can attract and separate its students accordingly without misleading them,” Teo added.

The study paths that Form Four students can choose include engineering, science, maths, living skills, technical studies and a few other options which are still in development stage.

“Students can also pick up to five elective subjects and mix between the subjects in this new system.”

Meanwhile, touching on the growing number of local students seeking education at international schools, Teo said it was up to the parents to decide.

“The decision to send a children to private or international school lies with a child’s parent.

“However, this does not mean that our national education system is less effective or substandard.

“We constantly learn and improve on our study syllabus to make sure the education taught at government schools are on par with the international standards,” she said.

Music is not Art? Or Art is now for those Business subjects like Accounting, Economics, etc.? (then why don't call it Business? So confusing).

What's Reading? Don't tell me at Form 4 there's student still trying to learn Reading? WTF!

And whats the difference between Science and Technology?

Fuckin hell can I know how much thought was actually put by Maszlee and his people into this?!

Exactly! Hence my query on how much thought they actually put in if even the segregation category so imbecilic.

But then some people here seems happy with the mediocrity that we get from our government.

This sounds like we're adopting US style education? Students go to classes they choose, while they'll share some common classes. It'll take time for people to adapt, but it sounds like a better way to go.

it is a single stream. so it is still stream.

also, i think it works like college where ppl may go for different classes that they are interested in and yet share the same class for basic subject like bm bi sejarah etc.
im curious how it will be handled and im pretty sure it wasn't "cause more segregation" as claimed by intellectual /k.
the abbreviation of the word STREAM is just to say it is a single stream that consist of all together.

Tapi bila benda yg announce pun bunyi macam tak pikir panjang kena la bagi pendapat. You think so far they have been doing good job? There is no trust in our current ministers competency anymore right now. Btw, as TS said, this was announced before la.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a good idea in general but then it's not exactly something very cutting edge with other countries already using it. Like following Finland's education system or Japan's before, all just announce with no actual details or plans. Already 1.5 years. Only 3.5 years left. Want to wait until when?

Last time i was i Perdagangan stream. Really makes no sense. There was only 2 classrooms between 70 people. And we could opt to upgrade to science or downgrade to arts anytime in the 2 years. Only 3 students from the 2 classes opted that. 1 to science and 2 to arts.

This is easier said than done. Not necessarily bad since US system uses this system where they choose the subjects.

It is VEry IMPORTANT howare they going to implement this system and how our 50-60 years STREAM can adapt to this change. Also how Universities will rank our "SPM" now.

This sounds like we're adopting US style education? Students go to classes they choose, while they'll share some common classes. It'll take time for people to adapt, but it sounds like a better way to go.

but the problem is facility. students move around like college/uni students, depending where their classes will be held. at school how? end up doing streaming. those who take sciences, end up in one class, those who take technology under 1 class, etc.
hmmm hmm.gif

It's a scaling up for how some students take Islamic Studies and those taking Moral studies. Possible, but infra is needed to support multiple smaller classes. Most new schools nowadays are moving to interconnected buildings with central court, so movement should be much smoother. Students will also need locker ala American schools so that they don't have to lug around textbooks to all their classes.

Honestly, these first few years will be tough. Facilities will be the least of the problems. Can imagine the complaints ranging from parents complaining their smart kid are in the same class as slow students to not enough students for unpopular classess.

Just in case you guys dont know, almost all uni in Malaysia, including private unis, report a big drop in the number of students doing science, engineering and technology courses.

For some reasons, students nowadays donwan to do these courses anymore. Why not, being a youtuber can easily get some money.

*
What cutting edge you want? Step by step la. Relekz, dont pancut so awal, 1.5 years is nothing if u want to implement something in a country with so many different type of schools and so many different races and background. A jawi crap also can stir till like no turn back better take thing slowly but toward to correct direction la.

Adoi comprehend la. I'm not asking for cutting edge solution. I said this is not something new pun since other countries done already. They have already announced this before, now announced again, but the thing announced like not given much thought pun. As I said, if you are happy with the mediocre work done by our ministers now then good for you la. Tunggu la another 2, 3 years for them to implement. As things go now don't think they have much time pun.

Give time not an issue if things you announce don't sound dumb.

For example: 'Give us time to rectify Malaysia economy, just wait2 we are going to make perotiga flying car, build jambatan bengkok, let foreigners buy our properties at cheaper prices, bla bla', you think we should just keep quiet?

Wait, I already know your answer, never mind.

Reading...maybe become teacher?

Music - a lot wei. Music engineer, producer, musicians etc. But maybe Malaysia market is stagnant, elsewhere should have better opportunities.

you should look at sekolah kampung. my previous school still couldn't get a new block (4 level block); i've heard from my brother that previous previous principal had requested it. so every major exams, all non-exam classes have to be relocated - i had to transfer to chemistry/science lab back then.

I know. Honestly, the freedom to choose your elective is a noble goal. But our schools or more accurately our nation lacks the infra to do it right. And funding is lacking cause our cities/town/villages are rarely planned, but grown organically. I imagine rural schools will end up offering smaller selection of classes then those in cities. But i guess schooling inequality even happens in US of A, so good luck MoE.
