Update: The thesis has been long passed, and I have the cert now. Face to face communication is good to clear things up between you and the prof.
I thought that's a given? Part of our thesis submission requirement at USM's Institute of Postgrad Studies is a schedule of supervisor consultation that represents the proof of the meetings we had with our supervisors to discuss progress.
Although I roughly knew what I wanted to research (since it was something that intrigued me at work), I needed my supervisor's help to frame it from the perspective of academia.
My first submission was rejected coz the work wasn't rigorous enough, so I spent an extra semester rewriting the whole damn thing to tighten it way up. A royal pain in the arse but I learned a hell lot from the experience!
The biggest difficulty I had in thesis writing was adjusting to the style required by academia. At work, it would be considered a long-winded abomination that would bore the client to death (we're trained to simplify by any means necessary) & I really had trouble getting a handle on it.
