Awesome TV slams suspension by MYTV amid legal review

The television channel calls the suspension ‘unethical and unlawful’ when the Court of Appeal has not delivered its decision yet.

PETALING JAYA: Local broadcaster Awesome TV has slammed digital terrestrial television provider MYTV Broadcasting Sdn Bhd for suspending the channel, calling it “unethical and unlawful”.

It is understood that the suspension is related to commercial issues on access fee payments between MYTV and Awesome TV, which have been brought to court.
Awesome TV CEO Adam Ilyas said the channel has filed for a review, which is pending before the Court of Appeal.

“Awesome TV has filed an appeal with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) appeal tribunal that has also not been decided,” he said in a statement today.
“The matter is still in court and has not been resolved. Pending the final outcome and as such, it is unethical and unlawful of MYTV Sdn Bhd to resort to suspending Awesome TV on their platform.”

Adam’s statement comes in response to MYTV’s announcement on its Facebook page that the Awesome TV channel on its platform will be suspended effective today following a decision by the court.

Checks on social media found MYTV viewers sharing images showing the Awesome TV channel not running.

“Channel 112 Awesome TV will not be broadcasted on the MYTV platform, starting from May 26, 2024 until further notice,” it wrote.
MYTV had previously stated its intention to suspend the channel from its platform starting Nov 2 last year because of commercial issues related to access fee payments between the two parties.

Awesome TV officially began broadcasting on Aug 1, 2020 offering local and international content. The channel is still available on Astro.

The local channel had previously come under criticism for its broadcast on job cut recommendations in the civil service, as well as reports alleged to be racially tinged.

Yet, that isn't enough to clear backlog payments for some talents/artists, where 2 years later still haven't get paid (either partially or fully).

Sad to watch NTV7 nowadays

“No funding” to revive it back to its glory days. But I hardly watch traditional TV anyway.

If you’re using a MYTV decoder, then yes, the box is connected to your TV via HDMI, which technically sets the picture quality (PQ) to 1080i.

However, in reality, MYTV still broadcasts 8TV in 576i.

According to Media Prima's recent report, TV3 has almost 50% Malay 4+ share, while 8TV has 74% Chinese 4+ share. 8TV's strength is partially because there is lack of competition on free to air space - you can imagine how much share 8TV has if it is counted standalone via total share - I can safely say another record high rating.

Even though 8TV has very high TV share, these days people aren't just watching 8TV only - people consume content via other legal and illegal streaming platforms too.

Media Prima is stated to have 58% total audience share (mainly just TV3, 8TV and TV9 - it is unlikely that NTV7 will attract any audience with current Didik TV KPM format). Media Prima do not release shares of it's rivals on their report.

TV9 also have good ratings on their "Kuasa 3 Malam" slot, with 900K audiences.
