I just bought a Brother MFC-1910W which works (ie. print, scan, copy & fax) beautifully via USB cable. It can also print and scan via WiFi from my mobile.

However, I am thinking of connecting the USB cable to the router (D-Link DIR842) USB port instead of PC. My router is on 24/7 but PC is switched off at night.

Has anyone connected the MFC-1910W directly via USB to the router before? Any problems with printing from the network? Please share your experience. Thank you.

The key word is "Print Server".

If your router is "Printer Server" capable and yes your might able to connect your printer to router USB port to print

You bought a Wireless capable printer, but you want to connect it directly to USB via router to make it wireless........ dry.gif

So why did you buy a wireless capable printer in the first place? doh.gif doh.gif

Use the printer front panel to connect to Wi-Fi. After connected, when you install printer driver in PC it will find the printer so long you are connected to the same wifi network.

Thank you for your prompt response.

I have 2 PCs (both desktops without Wifi capability) in 2 separate rooms, both are connected to the D-Link DIR-842 router by LAN cable, but the MFC-1910W printer is only connected directly to 1 PC (ie. A) via an USB printer cable. I have printed documents from my tablet and android phone via WiFi but I want to also print from PC (ie. B) that is too far to connect by USB printer cable.

So I guess, my question should be whether my DIR-842 router can act at a print server since it has an USB port.

If the DIR-842 cannot be used as a printer server, then I may have to consider one of the following options:

1) buying another printer for PC (B), or
2) buying a separate print server, or
3) buying a new router which has a built-in print server, or
4) buying a WiFi adapter for PC (B).

The cheapest solution for me is to find a way to connect my printer to the existing router for sharing with my 2 desktops.

Thank you.

Aiiiyyoooo.... That model of printer that you have IS NETWORK capable. That means if you connect it to your house Wifi, every PC in your house wifi or cable connected will be able to send printing to it. Once you run the installation it will find the printer in your network. Select it and it will install.

The prerequisite is that the printer has to join your wifi network first before all network capability will work. Use the god damn front panel on the printer to join Wifi. Press the wifi button to enable wifi and then press the menu to connect to wifi with visible SSID and then you can type in your wifi password. You do not need to use USB cable to host from PC or router with that printer model.

TS. This is the answer you want.
Printer got wifi already, means it can handle wireless printing no need cucuk cable la. As long as connected within same WiFi network.
If your phone is on wifi, can direct print also.

He can literally put the printer next to the router and still not use cable and get printing if it was connected to wifi. dry.gif

wait, pc (B) in same network, he can print wirelessly (means the wireless printing is ON),
but PC (B) didnt discover printer? Maybe PC (B) need to discover network printer 1st, or just going wireless je for all, thus giving PC(B) wireless adapter?

Exactly, my PC (B) which is connected to the router via a LAN ethernet cable, can't discover the printer on the same network. I am already using the wireless printing for my tablet & phone. Furthermore, this MFC-1910W doesn't have a LAN port, ie., can only connect via USB cable and/or WiFi.

My Desktops PC (A) & (B) have no wifi - network connected via LAN ethernet cable. My printer is connected to PC (A) via USB cable, and also connected to the router via WiFi. I am already printing from my tablet & phones.

Theoretically yes, but my 2 desktops don't have WiFi, only connected to router via LAN ethernet cable.

Thank you. I think you didn't understand my earlier posts. I have already setup the WiFi on day 1 and can print from my tablet and mobile phone wirelessly. My PC (A) can also print but my PC (B) can't find the printer on the same network. My PCs have no WiFi adapter.

By the way, I am almost 13 times over 5 years old. Thank you.

Thank you to you all.

I have finally found the MFC-1910W on the network in PC (B). It was blocked because of my firewall. Now working fine after installing the necessary drivers on PC (B). No need to use any print server or WiFi adapter, and no need to switch on the Host PC (A) which is connected to the printer via USB cable. That means PC (B) can now print independently on the network.

Cheers.

Now that the printer is running well as advertised by manufacturer and after 1 week my print count is already 50 sheets.

The estimated page yield for each cartridge is only 1000 pages and the original toner TN1000 is not that cheap at the RRP of RM145 each.

I wonder if it is penny wise pound foolish to use compatible toners, some are selling online for only about RM15 each.

Would appreciate if any guru could:
1) advise whether the use of compatible toner would void the warranty,
2) recommend the preferred brands (or sellers) of compatibles toners, and
3) share your experience on the compatible or remanufactured toners so far.

Thank you.
