Here's my review of the film which I posted in another forum... I watched this last night at Cathay Cineleisure:-
J.J. Abrams name is on the line... and Cloverfield is seriously going to crash and burn. Here's why.
I, like most people like you and the rest, are excited to watch this film. It was mysterious, it was the unknown that makes us want to watch this film. In short, it's a monster flick. We all love monster flicks. I'm sure in each of us a small little voice wanting you to watch monster movies that is good and entertaining. I love Deep Rising (directed by Stephen Sommers) because of its cliche but a fun one, I love Tremors because just like Deep Rising. The Relic done by Peter Hyam was so so... and Godzilla (by Roland Emmerich) gave us something already that's been seen before and failed to entertain and awe the audience.
So when I heard J.J. Abrams name in Cloverfield after watching the trailer, this is going to be an interesting movie. I mean, the teaser and the full trailer plus the 30 seconds TV Spot has made us want to watch this film. With all the mystery and hush hush on this film, who wouldn't want to watch? So tonight, I got my free passes to watch this movie... got my popcorn and mineral water set and went to Hall 9, seating at row K (the last row in front was R). There aren't many people because nobody knows what this movie about (unlike us, we are the real deal). Watch a few trailers and the movie starts.
My first reaction to the opening was, another Blair Witch. True enough from beginning till the end, it's Blair Witch. Trust me, do not sit in middle row or very near to the cinema screen because you will need a strong stomach to watch this film with all the running that is going about. So fine... what I wait for is the story and how the movie present itself.
We get at least 15 to 20 minutes of blah blah blah about 5 people and then a loud boom and then another 9/11 style scene. Poor statue of Liberty's head always get smashed... I mean, does Hollywood hates her? Anyway...
We get a glimpse of the monster with no name (but it's called 'something') and a guy documenting the entire film. Later on, we will get to see most of it and let me tell you this... it is nothing exceptional. Seriously, nothing original here. I have seen designs of monsters in so many monster films, this is cross from one monster flick with another monster flick and mash it into another ugly huge Godzilla size monster flick. The only difference is, this monster has backup. Not going to review the backup because it's a spoiler... unless you are not planning to watch it, just PM me and I will review what's the monster backup.
Anyway, more running, people dying, military shooting, more people dying... blah blah blah, we get to see the monster in full frontal, more running again... and it ends like Blair Witch style. End of story.
I seated on my chair and was like "what the f*ck is this?!?" Blair Witch guerilla style film direction that the only thing that is good are loud sounds and plenty of boom effects. Oh, throw in a love story inside... big deal.
Trust me guys, I am watching a total stinker. Nothing original, a lot of illogical Hollywood reality and furthermore, Matt Reeves direct this film. J.J. Abrams only produced this movie. I am sure Paramount is not going to use him anymore when this movie debuts in the U.S. Paramount is smart to entice us with the hype and marketing skills of promoting this film... but believe me, when you pay your hard earn money to watch this film (which is about an hour and 28 minutes long), you would rather rent it for free...
Overall:- Another wannabe Godzilla cross Blair Witch film... a real stinker!
