Hi,

Just wondering how is the reliability of the latest Volkswagen models (especially the Passat) in terms of the DSG gearbox and general maintenance

Is it a good model for daily commute ( mix of highway and klang valley jams ) ?

If you're getting the Passat 380TSI / Tiguan, they're using the proven 6 speed wet clutch DSG and that has almost non-existent reliability issues compared to the 7 speed wet clutch DSG being used on vehicles like Jetta, Passat 280TSI and golf R line.

correction, the more problematic ones are the dq200 7 speed dry clutch. Even the more reliable dq250 6 speed wet clutch dsg also have problems here and there, just not the the point of the dry clutch version.

Newer versions of 7 speed wet clutch have the code name of DQ/DL38x/5xx, these have improvements made from the learnings of the problematic 2xx series.

In short, avoid any gearbox that mated with engines below 250nm and you're better off.

if it doesnt have issues, its going to burn a hole in your wallet later for maintenance.

If you dont mind the costs or potential issues it works fine for daily commute. The DSG is a poor choice for traffic jams because its not your standard auto, its a manual gearbox thats fully automated, and so traffic jams can wear it out fast as it has 2 clutches, treat it like a manual.
