I think it will get deducted and refunded later. My US Treasuries Dividend got deducted (30% WHT) and I got it back later.

You bought BIL ETF or you bought the underlying T-bills yourself?

I know US T-bills/bonds interests (the underlying of BIL ETF) are not taxable, but at ETF level things might be different.

https://seedly.sg/posts/is-there-tax-wht-on...sted-bonds-etf/

Stashaway claimed they can claim back US government bonds interests though they only do it once a year: https://www.stashaway.my/help-center/115010...dends-get-taxed

Refunded automatically.

Ok I checked on Bogleheads, you are right, the dividends from BIL are considered as "portfolio interests", which are exempted from WHT.

https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Nonresident...id_as_dividends

So, from now on, I am gonna hold BIL and see when will IBKR refund me the 30% WHT.

In case you are holding BIL ETF, Gwynbleidd , how often does IBKR refund BIL ETF's WHT? Is it monthly? quarterly or annually?

Thanks for sharing. Learnt something new today. smile.gif

Transferred 24k MYR to 6945.42 SGD at 4.02 pm using Sunway Money. SGD.MYR rate (from investing.com) is about 3.4425, so some 38 basis-point spread.

Money received same day today at 5:11 pm.

Just to chime in, made a transfer today and did some math.

Send MYR 3,000.00

Wise:
Receive USD 638.29

Sunway Money:
MYR -> SGD 864.76
SGD -> USD 638.23 (2USD conversion fee)

Comparison done around 8:30AM on a working day.

Today it's really just margin of error level day, might as well use Wise for the speed, convenience and flexibility in amount.
*
Now that Wise can be linked to IBKR, the money transfer is immediate right? It shows up in your IB account on the same day?

Did anyone notice something odd about IBKR's profit calculation today?

But IBKR shows the same figure with a negative sign in front of them plus highlighted in red...

Anyone that trade stocks listed on LSE can chime in?

I just noticed that my trading fee for VWRA (LSE listed, denominated in USD) have reduced from 1.92 USD to 0.35 USD. Can anyone else also confirm this?
*
I checked IBKR's webpage: https://www.interactivebrokers.com/en/prici...e.php?re=europe

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Commissions for USD-denominated ETF/shares listed on LSE is about 1.70 USD for tiered (plus a few US cents for 3rd-party fees). 0.35 USD should be for NYSE ARCA-listed ETFs, no? You have screenshots to share? Maybe you read the ticker symbol incorrectly?

Can you check the exchange/market maker/ECN in which your order is routed? The cheaper fee might suggest an "internalized" trade where IBKR is your trade's counterparty directly.

Is the trade done on IBKR ATS?

You can check the exchange info in the "trade confirmation" statement generated by IBKR on the web client.

Wow your USFR trade was executed in a dark pool! Did you use VLowFee setting for SMART?

I tried to search for EUIBSI didn't find much info, and my best guess is "European Union (EU) IBKR (IB) Slovenia (SI)" based on the EU country code here: https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-ex...y:Country_codes

Not sure why a Slovenian entity might come into play when IBKR Europe mainly serves from Ireland, Hungary and the UK. https://www.interactivebrokers.eu/en/home.php

The Slovenian entity ("si-quotes" in the URL link) is linked back to IBKR Ireland, judging from the URL country code (.ie): https://www.interactivebrokers.ie/en/trading/si-quotes.php

So looks like IBKR's own internal "direct routing mechanism". Your SMART setting really intrigues me... you have trades routed to dark pools, IBKR's ATS and now some funny Slovenian "system". laugh.gif

i traded XLK bought & sold. first leg only charged U$0.34, then closing trade the regular $0.35... until now i can't think of a reason for the 0.01 cent rebate
*
The 0.01 cent is just an exchange rebate given when your bid/ask price is nice enough to improve liquidity for the market makers. I received that rebate sometimes from NYSE/NASDAQ ISLAND too.

You can google "exchange rebate" to know more. There are some "business" issues with the rebate mechanism.

So, my prof is right. IBKR wants to do prop trading and makes money out of your (irrational) trades. They are motivated to trade and make profit, not just merely being a middleman matching and routing orders.

I am worried that this may turn IBKR into investment bank trading desks prior to 2008...

Prop trading still exists in i-banks today, albeit at a much smaller scale. Prof knows friends at CICC Hong Kong who are involved. He said regulators know as well, but they keep one eye closed...

That's what I am trying to find out, ahahaha, I just started holding it at the start of the month. According to IBKR's CS, they have a partner that claw back WHT for them once a year if applicable, but they won't clarify if USFR is WHT-free.

Supposedly US treasuries ETF can mark their dividends to be qualified interest income with has no withholding tax levied, SGOV does so and IBKR partners will charge first refund later. Not sure if USFR enjoys this. Likely, though. Some other forumers were selling them right before ex-date to prevent WHT, but I want to try holding for one full year and see if I get the refund.

Conversation here: https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...#entry107454145

Additional reading: (look for dividend and interest income)

I also followed DJFoo and Gwynbleidd's advice and started buy-and-hold starting from this month. I didn't sell BIL on 3rd of July (this Monday).

Will report back if BIL ETF's dividends are refunded.

Toku Bogleheads website mentioned:

QUOTE
Interest distributions paid as dividends

Where a US domiciled ETF receives US source interest on its holdings, and that interest would not have been taxable to a US nonresident if paid directly, the portion of the dividend attributable to this interest is 'portfolio interest'[11] and can be exempted from nonresident withholding.[12] This situation is unlikely in ETFs that hold only stocks, but will be common in bond ETFs, and any mixed-asset ETFs.

Again, for this to occur correctly both the ETF provider and the broker need to be aware of the relevant qualified interest income (QII) regulations.

This new rule was only put in place during Obama's last tenure in the White House in December 2015 under the PATH act. Previously, short-term capital gain/interest income distributed via ETF (legally known as registered investment companies, RICs) are subject to 30% tax like corporate dividends.

Anyone familiar with US estate tax on non-citizen non-resident aliens ?

Say both husband & wife hold a US-based IBKR brokerage joint account with Rights of Survivorship (JWORS). Upon the death of one account holder, the assets are transferred to the surviving account holder. Is US estate tax applicable to such transfer of US-situated assets, assuming the total value > $60K ?

Is it valued at 50% (half share) or 100% of assets under the joint-account ?

Are non-US domiciled S&P500 ETFs (eg. VUSA) considered US-situated assets ?

1. If the surviving spouse is not a US citizen, in general, the portion of jointly owned property that is taxed in the estate of the first spouse to die is based upon who provided the “consideration” to purchase the property (i.e. whose assets were used to purchase the property).

What is the layman's terms for overnight trading in ibkr?

If I activate overnight trading, I can trade 24 hour?
*
Layman's term is... overnight trading.

23.5 hours. Overnight hours is from 8 pm to 3.30 am the next day US Eastern time. Premarket session starts from 4 am US Eastern.

If you can understand Mandarin this post is pretty informative: https://sparksparkfinance.com/reviews-ratin...-trading-hours/

Note that all orders during overnight trading hours are only routed to IBKR Eos ATS (IBKR's own alternative trading system), and there is liquidity issue to take into consideration.

You do have a point on trading chinese ADR stocks. They should be more liquid and track the price movements of their corresponding HKEX-listed ones.
