It has always been my understanding that
- SIRIM is giving certification of electrical safety and compatibility to Malaysia electricity distribution system.
In short, SIRIM is Checking whether the power adapter is safe and compatible or not.
- MCMC primarily checks the wireless connectivity in electronic devices.
In short, they certify the WiFi and Bluetooth is good and operates within the spectrum allowed.
I know these two Agencies does a lot more certification, but if you scrutinized the certificate that is paraded by the so called "legitimate" Android TV box - we will most likely find that the certification are as described above.
If cross check on MCMC site and see what other products falls within the same certification, we will then see a very general lists of telecommunications and mobile phones of other companies.
I did my own research on this, seeing that the "Tx3 mini expert" who was suppose write up about this didn't login anymore to Lowyat.
I asked around the resellers, and understand the loophole used to "con"/scam unsuspecting buyers.
The certification costs around RM15-25k, and valid for 5 years.
With this certification, they can parade that Android box anywhere in Malaysia for sale in that 5 years. They target places like shopping mall and hypermarket, and openly sell their goods under the pretext of MCMC legitimacy.
Then the word "lifetime" subscription and "pay only once" is marketed to the hilt. Most if not all, employs the business structure operated successfully by EVp** and UnB**** that has been in this business for 5 years or more.
However, don't be fooled, there has been cases of locals trying to imitate these two 'Tw/Hk' business structure and couldn't lasts 18 months, most notably 'Infinite' TV box recently.
Legally wise, you are paying RM399 to RM799 for the hardware and 1 year subscription to a "useless" IPTV app which shows all free to view channels anyway, as in the case of L**g TV.
If you don't get your Axtro channels, the company has no obligation to you. You can walk into their premise with your lawyer, and they will say " see you in court". They will then say, the box left their premise "clean", the box was either jailbreak to install illegal unauthorized content during the reseller's handling or during the end user's intervention. Then they will then say, they will "black list" the reseller and post it on their website for show.
The black list serves two purposes, one as described above and one to discourage resellers to sell below recommended retail price. Whatever it is, it is purely just a show.
