Hi, hoping there are Ninja 650 owners here that can help me out with some questions.

I've been riding a Ninja 250 since 2012, and I finally sold it earlier this year. I've decided to upgrade and get a Ninja 650 in a few months, perhaps early next year.

1. How much is the average insurance + road tax for this bike?

2. How much more does the maintenance cost compared to a 250cc bike?

3. Finally, anyone here planning to sell their Ninja 650? biggrin.gif

Thanks!

Hi,

There is a whole community of ninja 650/z650 owners.
And so far the bike has been really good. Now to answer your question

1. Roadtax and insurance will depend on your NCD and all and the package you take. It can range from RM800 to 1.2k for both

2. Normal maintenance surprisingly costs almost the same as a 250. But major parts like tires will set you back slightly more than a 250.

3. Yes, i think there are a few who wishes to upgrade will be selling. Search for their FB page and join the whatsapp group.

4. Just a side note, i ride a Z650

Thanks for the reply.

Do you have any gripes with the bike? Some reviews complained about the vibrations, but they differ about the degree of vibration.

What's your personal opinion of the bike as an owner?

Those complains were from ppl who has ridden bikes which are way above the price point of a 650. Personally, i have no issues with the vibration. Can go log distance about 150km or more before you actually feel the effects. Other than that it's nothing much. The engine is actually pretty smooth for a parallel twin.

If I'm being honest Ninja 650 isn't really a huge upgrade from a 250 (only your wallet needs to be upgraded). Get a triple/four cylinder, that's an upgrade.

Riden a bike before? I actually have a few friends who are around that height but rides taller bikes. It's all in the experience and the one leg tip toe method. I myself am not tall too at 165 but comfortably able to ride the Z650. Even had no problems riding the bigger sibling the z900 as well.

Try measuring while someone else tries to start the bike as well - it should not drop below 9.6v while cranking I believe (someone can correct me if I'm wrong). Or take the battery to a store to get it inspected.

How old is the battery in question?

The battery is new though, sticker label is 2020 February.

when turn the key to on position, is there normally a sound?
like i heard that in my car when switching on.
but not really pay attention to the sound on the bike before.

Yeah, there should be a sound and the speedometer should sweep if it's an analog speedometer.

Worst case scenario, you will have to call up a Kawasaki workshop. If it was a battery issue, it would be a quick fix, but your issue sounds like something else.

Few things that might cause this, but if u have measured the voltage and it is fine. Then might be starter relay or fuel pump. Anyway, I thought u just bought this? Just ask the shop guy to trouble shoot for u maybe?

1. turn on key, see if neutral light on? speedometer got activate? fuel pump got priming sound? engine killswitch is at on position?

2. what happen when press start button?
(a) totally no response at all, or
(b) got a "tik" sound and then it reset as if just turn on the key with speedometer activate and fuel pump priming sound? or
© starter got crank but engine cannot start at all?

1. Light on, Speedo load normally. Not sure about fuel pump sound, but there are sound when i switch the key to on. the switch definately in on position.

2. it is ©. but not a real engine crank sound, more like some electronic sound, them speedometer restarts.

That sounds like you have situation (b). Most likely a spoiled starter relay. It is common in er6/versys but usually happen after few years of running.

If your bike is a new bike it shouldn't have starter relay failure. New bike within warranty, get the shop to fix it. If out of warranty, changing the relay is a simple job.

Not sure about current ninja650/z650, but previous er6/versys can just buy Yamaha nouvo starter relay cheap2, switch the contact pole and reinstall.

Just relax and enjoy the holiday then.. tongue.gif Since the bike just bought so better let them replace it for u.. Coz just took the bike, mostly they will warranty it.. Takkanlah just took 1 or 2 days also they don't wanna be responsible right? Anyway, I don't plan to do fun ride during this pkp/pkpb anyway.. Only ride to and from work.. Try to expose myself lesser outdoor..

What bike are you after? New or used?

I don't know all of them. I've been to Masjid Negeri, Bayan Baru, and Paya Terubong one. Not the Farlim or Relau one. Generally, to me and some of my friends, they are good. Test bikes and ECU check no problem. Some other frens do tell me they are occasionally cold, means don't layan or let you test ride. I think it depends on the timing and workload.

I'd say find the one closest to your home or office, get to know their foreman and the quality of their work.

Can you comment on this Z650?
*
I chose Z650 mainly because of the seat height, so i can ride in city with better confidence, and it is my first bike too.
The height is more or less same like CB500F, but since both of them around the same price range, i took higher CC bike. The shop that i bought my bike, Z650 is cheaper than CB500F sweat.gif

Riding experience so far so good, been to a few longer trip, quite enjoyable. Riding in city also ok, smooth ride, but cant squeeze in between car like a kapcai anymore.
Not very torque-ky, so it is easy to handle. i think it is a good buy.

i would say all 3 bike in your list is all good first bike to start, if you have the budget and want nice exhaust sound can try consider CB650R, exhaust sound is a lot better cause of 4 cylinder, but price is a step up.

Thank you for your feedback. I am looking at Z650 specifically because of it low seat height. I am only 163 so low seat height is important to me sweat.gif

There's nothing wrong with limiting bike choice to a certain height and playing it safe, IMO. Whatever makes the rider feel comfortable and confident so they can enjoy the activity.

Cz I don't have much experience with taller bike, even during B Full training I used Virago instead of ER6N.
Its is mostly mental I think, so definitely I need to overcome this. That's why I am looking for low seat height bike so I can get used to it~

Depending on what riding style you're looking for, among CB500F, Z650 and MT07, MT07 wins at speed, but comfort wise, I think Z650 wins. Which bike is your personal choice? Would it motivate you better to ride a bike that you like, vs the one you compromised for?

Riding school and JPJ exam requires us to stop with right foot on brake, and left foot down. Keep this in mind, so make sure you have no problem setting down your left foot. You can also consider some adjustments on a bike to make it lower.

Just bought my Z650 as my first bike. In case those with short height are wondering if the bike is good for short people. It is. My height only 153 cm but i can still tiptoe the bike with both of my leg. Usually i just use one leg la if i stop in traffic. The only con i had was when i tried to reverse the bike from the parking spot. Need to dismount first and pull the bike out. Other than that. Its quite an easy bike for short rider.
