Not sure this one called chip or star. Inside is smooth not damaged. I did put some tape inside asap as I could.

How much to repair at shop? Can recommend one around puncak alam/bandar saujana area? icon_question.gif

Or just DIY? Seems there are many selling these less than rm20. Work or not?

Try the repair kit first. If cannot work, then either change or go to windscreen specialist for temporary repair.

TLDR: It will crack all the way sooner or later. Very dangerous.

Can a Cracked Windshield Shatter?
Phillip Thompson
January 16, 2017
By Phillip Thompson
The short answer is yes, a cracked windshield can shatter. But there are several factors involved, and realize that using the word “shatter” may not be entirely accurate. Windshield glass is laminated, meaning it consists of two layers of glass with a thin plastic film between the layers. You may have heard it called “safety” glass, as its construction prevents the glass from breaking into more dangerous shards. It usually breaks into smaller pieces.

A cracked window screen has the potential to grow as the glass expands and contracts due to temperature fluctuations, pressure applied to the glass, an object striking the glass, or dirt introduced to the crack. Any of these factors could worsen the crack – which has already weakened the glass – and cause it to “shatter.”

broken-windshield

But even if the glass does shatter, the likelihood of it collapsing into your vehicle or onto your hood, is unlikely. Windshields are held in place with strong urethane adhesives, which prevent leaks, noise and movement of the glass. Also, because the glass is laminated, the entire windshield generally won’t separate from the frame.

This doesn’t mean it’s safe to drive with a cracked windshield. Even a small crack on glass means your windshield’s structural integrity has been compromised, which means it is now a safety hazard to you and your passengers. Even if the crack or chip is small, it’s important to have it checked out. You’ll need a qualified auto glass technician to help you determine if the glass can be repaired or if it should be replaced.

i chipped my windscreen a couple of weeks ago and used the diy method; holding up well so far (fingers crossed!)

i used the generic one below because i feel that it covers more surface area:

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

a couple of tips if you're going the diy route:
(1) make sure to clean the crack THOROUGHLY to get the best possible fix, use a thumb tack to get as much debris and broken glass out of the crack as possible.
(2) when applying the resin in the cup, have a hair dryer handy and heat up the inside of the windshield in order to get the resin flowing to cover the micro cracks for a better application/result

Edit: the kit can be purchased at MRDIY for around RM17 if youre in a rush but on Shopee i got mine for RM10

the DIY is for crack and not for chip

it will glue the crack together. but u need be careful not to ketuk the place again.

I know 1 fella had a crack near the rear mirror there, then he fill back. Then he sent his car to pasang dashcam and the crack reappeared.

This is an example that it's usually the customer who cheat insurance companies and not the other way around.

I see your point.
But in my case luckily when I did(bought the kit at MrDIY), it was flawless. Pretty good job I think I did.
It wasn't my car. Just bored and I drove his car sometimes so got irritated.
Anyway, it was back in 2019. I don't know how the car is now. Shit can't even remember which car was it. laugh.gif
Hopefully my fix still holding up.

technical answer is YES

BUT...there is a big but...provided your insurance company let u add-on windscreen
99% won't let u add-on directly, they will ask u to engage with customer service to add on and want u to submit lots of stuff
due to suspicion(insurance companies aren't stupid)

so if u found an insurance that let u add-on directly when renewing online
things to do is
1. don't claim directly...wait like 6 months
2. continue renew with them with windscreen add-on the following year....u don't get lucky twice

If out of the blues, you tell the insurance company that you wanna add windscreen coverage, they will ask you to bring the car in for inspection fist.

If you wait and add that when you renew your insurance, they will gladly add without any question.

I done this a few times with different cars/insurance companies.

i said the above because my car's windscreen was chipped last year(went to a few windscreen shop, all say unrepairable)
february this year my insurance is due...i plan to add-on windscreen to claim.....almost all insurance companies don't allow me to add on...all ask me to contact customer service
only etiqa allow me to renew with windscreen add-on...that was a major relieve
and i claim the windscreen last month and approved

so yeah...that's why i say i don't get lucky twice...next year am gonna continue add-on windscreen coverage

My trick is when i renew roadtax on November, i will add windscreen coverage. Waiting for 2-3month later like around January/Feb. Then i will claim.

I dont think insurance will check coz I'm using runner. But who know

it's still subject to approval

will check or not i don't know but for me, i'll continue adding the windscreen coverage the following year
and not only adding it when i needed to because i feel like i won't get lucky twice/the next time since it's a common thing/issue in WM
