My 12 yrs old Samsung 226bw is getting more white patches day by day, tried some methods to rectify it but still no use.
Years back like to play strategy games so a TN panel with 60hz and R9 270 2GB could still satisfy me. Recently trying more on FPS and racing titles. Felt the 226bw struggles to keep up. So thinking of replacing it with a larger 27" 144hz panel.

But i'm not sure to get a 1080p or 1440p.

Current setup:
i5 4670 3.4Ghz
Sapphire RX580 8GB
Hyper-x 16Gb DDR3 1600mhz

Correct me if Im wrong,
If 1080p, can get better frames, higher details but less sharp with a 27" screen
If 1440p, can get sharper image, future proof but lower frames, lower details

Currently eyeing on:
1080p: Acer VG270P
1440p: Acer VG271UP

Also I'm unsure of the smoothness/performance if let's say the gc is only pushing out 60fps to a 1440p 144hz monitor.

Hope sifu here could shed some light and suggestion on models. icon_rolleyes.gif

It all depends to whether you want to future proof your gaming experience. If you want to then go for the 1440p 144hz.

Your current system will never achieve 144hz at 1440p. At 1080p maybe at low or mid video settings.

I would advice you to go 1440p incase in the future you want to upgrade your system. If you are not planning to then just 1080p will be a cheap solution.

Ya true. Might not wanna upgrade so soon since still can play some AAA titles.

Eyes said 1440p but RX580 said 1080p sweat.gif

If low fps on 144hz 1440p will it be better or worst than a 60hz screen?

Supposed to be the other way round. Graphic card first, then increase resolution.

Im using a 27" 1440p 165 Hz Gsync monitor and I can tell you unless you are running a 2080 super/2080ti you can never touch 144fps on modern AAA titles, heck not even all modern games can reach the max 144/165hz on 1440p because it is super demanding.

To answer your question, the monitor is an investment, you need higher graphic card spec to reach high refresh rate gaming. However, if you are playing CS:GO/PUBG/APEX/DOOM/FORTNITE then the 1440p max frame rate can be achieved easier by lowering some eye candy since these FPS titles doesn't demand as much as other AAA titles.

If you just want a high refresh rate gaming on 1080p then your CPU also matters too. 24"1080p 144hz TN panel should be more reasonable within your PC spec now. If you go into 1440p 144Hz I am afraid you gotta invest more into your entire PC hardware for the eye popping candy. drool.gif

580 can't run 1440p 60.
1080p should got around 80 to 90.
on newer games of course.
so depends on what you want to upgrade in the future.
might need a 2070s for 1440 144hz.

i suggest looking at the physical model at acer store before buying.
acer sometimes uses cheap and shitty ips.

You don't need to hit 144 fps on a variable refresh rate monitor to have a decent gaming experience -- 60 fps @1440p is more than adequate in most cases. So unless you're into e-sports or you play competitively and need all the framerate you can get to come out on top, there's no reason to think that a sub-60 framerate equates to an unsatisfactory gaming experience. biggrin.gif

The RX 580 is a 1080p card - so I'd recommend to go with a 1080p monitor unless you want to upgrade your GPU or turn down your graphics settings icon_idea.gif

Thx, guess I'll go with 1080p for the moment. Not too keen on ultra details as long as smooth using mid-high settings is fine. Can get 60-70fps on 1080p is good enough for me. If going for 1440p guess the cpu, gpu and ram all gotta change.

Thx, guess 1440p mayb too much for 580 despite AMD market it as a 1440p card. 1080p should be the sweet spot.
Any suggestion besides Acer?

Hvn tried or seen it in person even youtube gameplay couldn't justify the performance for 1440p@60fps. Thus asking 1st hand experience from u all here.
Will be opting for 1080p 144hz then. Guess 1440p will reserve for new hardware in the future innocent.gif

Thx, upgrading the gpu is an option too but it could bottleneck the cpu. Guess might as well upgrade the whole rig down the road. icon_idea.gif

Afraid the noob i5 4670 couldn't handle any higher tier GPU, bottlenecking it all the way. laugh.gif

60 fps @1440p doesn't diminish visual quality at all when used in conjunction with adaptive synchronization technology such as g-sync or free sync. I have tried using a lower refresh rate on my ROG PG279q like 60 or 85 Hz (instead of 165 Hz) to see whether it hurt the overall gameplay experience, and it hadn't -- YMMV of course. biggrin.gif

Good to hear that. Freesync/G-sync does helps a lot from stuttering and tearing.
