just to share a journey of 4feet slabs from being a part of a sawn off tree log to being a bar table

slabs arrived in rough form and dirty, size around 20inches x 4feet each.
user posted image

first we clean the slab and start work on levelling them flat on both sides

user posted image

once its flat, we put it on the table saw

user posted image

as we want to trim off the sides of the natural edge/life edge as we want to join two pieces to make a wider table of 2x4feet

The slab looks moist. When it dry up, it is warp and crack.

customer doesnt mind the rustic crack look after a few months. they dont want to wait 2 years. what they can accept as final result and foot the bill, we just do as per their request.

Ah.. I remember you. Understand already!!

ya cos the customer deals in wood slabs and they know its gonna still have wood movement/crack/shrinkage. and they accepted the potential issues that you and i also brought up before.. smile.gif

biggrin.gif thanks
there were 5-6planks burried on some compost waste, hence the black dirt on the wood.- first pic.

actually i collected the bottom pic, 2pcs first, cos i suspect something nice underneath the dirt, and sure enough after planed.. they look so good.

went back to collect the rest few days ago. dirty also nevermind, scrape the loose dirt and throw in car first biggrin.gif
going to plane the rest of boards and see how they look. will update later.

How about the inside of the wood? Untreated wood should rot easily right? I wonder if they still can sustain weight and use for furniture
*
wood got many different classes.
certain super durable kind 1-2years left outside also no issue. wont be effected.

Not bad, although I'm not a big fans of wood, but I curious how they will turn out from abandoned rotten wood to nice furniture
*
actually the story is not really abandoned wood, but the place i go to got so much wood until its left at the side of the garden area.. and then some leaves and compost was covering them for half year.
so i decide to pick it and see why they kept it there..turns out it was really nice wood to begin with.
