It does make sense if you value the benefits that it provides. FYI for my son's Swift Sport, we also went thru downsizing from 17' (which was the size that came with it when we bought the car), to 16', and now finally to 15'. We absolutely love the transformation and not a single regret in going through this downsizing. Some people may say it doesn't make sense because it's smaller, looks worse or whatever but those are just subjective and not real. As long as you are ok with how it looks and you do value the benefits then by all means go ahead. Even though in the short term you may spend more to change rims but in the long term the cost of tires is much cheaper for 15'. You can also sell off your 16' to recover some of the cost.

Like now my my recent car purchase, I also want to down size from 18 to 17 as the 18' is ridiculously harsh due to the super thin profile tires on it.

Many Enkeis are also made in Taiwan or even Philippines or Indonesia. You can buy good branded Taiwan or Thailand rims like Enkei Tuning, Advanti, Konig, Lenso and it'll be better and lighter than the stock Enkei. Of course have to top up, nothing is for free but in the long run compensated by the much cheaper 15' tire price.

Decent 15' original rims like Konig, Advanti Storm, and Lenso are around 1.2-1.3k just for rims only. Now for good tires, say Hankook V12 Evo 2 is about rm165/pc so total is around 650-700. So total package should be about rm2k if buy all without trade in.

Now if they say you top up rm1.3k to get all that then it's pretty good actually coz stock 16' rims won't sell much. (FYI I sold my stock 16' Swift rims made by Enkei Japan for only rm550). BUT if they give fake rims (like those fake Thailand ce28/TE37/re30/rpf1 etc2) and even cheaper/lower class tires than that V12E2, then you might get conned! Coz those fake rims are much cheaper, only rm500-600/set for 15'. So just be careful coz I doubt they would give you those good rims with good tires and only top up 1.3k with trade in.

Hmm it's impossible that the weight is only half! Even the most expensive high tech rims will not achieve half the weight, that's bollocks! At best is it saves 40% of the weight. I also doubt at 1k you can get decent original lightweight rims, most likely overpriced fakes, so be careful there. Bring a weighing scale when shopping for rims. Take note of the brands we mentioned above and insist on them. Make sure also they don't give you shit tires like Continental CC6 or other low end models. Get minimum the Hankook V12 Evo 2.
