Do you know about Thunderbolt™ 3 technology?
A glimpse into the specifics of what Thunderbolt™ 3 has to offer

A significant amount of people do not know what Thunderbolt’s technology is about. Some maybe never even heard of Thunderbolt before.
However, as most of you do know, the tech industry never stands still and a growing number of devices are implementing Thunderbolt ports as a connector.

Thunderbolt™ is a hardware interface developed by Intel. It focuses on connecting external peripherals (like USB devices or displays) to your computer.
Their newest version, Thunderbolt™ 3, has the same design as the well-known USB-C connector, but its performance is far more superior than the regular USB-C, or any type of other connector for that matter.

user posted image
Thunderbolt ports and cables always have the Thunderbolt logo

With a maximum speed of 40 Gbps, the Thunderbolt™ 3 interface is at least four times faster than any other cable.
It also drives more protocols than any other connector (Thunderbolt, DisplayPort, USB and PCIe).
Moreover, it has 4 times the bandwidth of HDMI and it allows you to daisy-chain up to 6 devices from just one port.

That is why our CalDigit TS3 Plus dock station will boost connectivity to the extreme for all Thunderbolt™ 3 enabled computer users.
And CalDigit has a whole bunch of other Thunderbolt™ 3 compatible products to explore! icon_rolleyes.gif

Hi sHawTY,

To which docking stations of Dell and HP are you referring to?
Cheaper docking stations usually only have USB2.0 or USB3.0 ports which are a lot slower than Thunderbolt™ 3 ports.
For a comparison, USB3.0 ports run at 5 Gbps whereas Thunderbolt ports run at 8x that speed (40 Gbps).

Regarding the DisplayPort, there are many ways the TS3 Plus can connect 2 monitors (up to dual 4K display).
You can either daisy-chain an additional monitor or use the Thunderbolt 3 port which supports all display connectors (HDMI, DVI, VGA etc) with adapters.

It's true that the TS3 Plus is not the cheapest dock, but the quality and speed at which our dock operates is among the best! thumbsup.gif

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about
Those docking stations I've mentioned earlier is using Thunderbolt™ 3, not USB 2.0 nor USB 3.0

Hi sHawTY,

Could you let us know the specific model of Dell/HP dock you are referring to?
We would be happy to compare both docks with our TS3 Plus for your reference.

Hi sHawTY,

Thank you for specifying the models you mentioned earlier.
We quickly looked up the specs for these docks and we’ll compare them to our own TS3 Plus dock below:

Thunderbolt ports
It’s true that all of these docks have a Thunderbolt 3 port. However, the TS3 Plus is the only dock that has 2 of these ports which allows users to daisy-chain up to 6 devices. This won’t be possible with the docks from Dell or HP.

Operating System Compatibility
Please note that the Dell Business dock is only compatible with Windows, whereas the TS3 Plus and HP G2 dock are compatible with both Windows and Mac.

SD Card and S/PDIF
The CalDigit TS3 Plus has these two additional port types. An SD card reader SD4.0 UHS-II and a Digital optical audio (S/PDIF) which the other two docks do not have.

Display ports
The Dell Business and HP G2 docks do have more ports available for displays. However, the TS3 Plus supports any kind of display connector (HDMI, mDP, VGA and DVI) with adapter and can connect any display in addition to its DisplayPort connector.

We hope this comparison provides a better understanding as to why these docks are priced differently. In the end it depends on the user's requirements and preferences which dock suits them best as there are many options out there.

Thank you for commenting and sharing your thoughts. Feel free to ask or comment anytime as we would like to engage as much as possible.

Thunderbolt and USB-C compared
A closer look at the differences

As Thunderbolt 3 uses the exact same port as the USB Type-C port (USB 3.1), it's easy to mistake these two to have equal performance.
Both connectors have excellent performance but there are some significant differences as well.
Let's take a look at the development of both Thunderbolt and USB:

The Thunderbolt 3 connector basically merges the Thunderbolt technology to USB.
USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 both share these key features:

- Reversible plug orientation (the connector can be plugged in either direction)
- Up to 100 watts of power delivery
- Supports multiple modes such as DisplayPort, USB, Thunderbolt etc.

On top of that, Thunderbolt 3 has an additional superior set of capabilities of its own:

- Top speed of 40 Gbps, making it the fastest connection available (USB 3.1/C-Type operates at 10 Gbps)
- Bi-directional with 4 lanes of PCI Express Gen 3 and 8 lanes of DisplayPort 1.2
- Able to connect to any dock, display or other peripheral device, including billions of USB devices

Have you experienced the speed of Thunderbolt 3 yet? ohmy.gif

The recently launched Connect 10G in more detail

user posted image

CalDigit recently launched the Connect 10G, a 10-Gigabit Ethernet Adapter that allows Thunderbolt 3 users (both Mac and Windows PCs) to connect to a 10GbE network from up to 100 meters! It provides 10x the performance of traditional 1Gb/s Ethernet ports found on most computers. This adapter enables Mac or PC workstations to join a shared storage environment for easier file access and collaboration. Thunderbolt 3 is the ideal interface for this adapter. With its 40Gb/s bandwidth, a lightning fast performance is guaranteed!

On top of that, the Connect 10G has a Wake-on-LAN function which allows users to wake up their computer remotely and access their files from anywhere. Moreover, its stunning aluminum chassis allows its internal components to stay cool and remain quiet.

For optimal performance, a Cat. 6a or 7 cable should be used. However, Cat 3, 5, 5e and 6 are compatible as well with maximum transmission speeds of up to 1Gb/s respectively. It also features Audio Video Bridging (AVB) which means that the adapter follows a set of IEEE standards ensuring that audio and video are transferred in real-time over the Ethernet port without any delay. The Connect 10G can also connect a Thunderbolt 3 computer to both office-wired 10-Gigabit Ethernet Networks and a fast NAS storage device. This compact, grill-shaped adapter is bus-powered and NBASE-T compatible too!

Dual monitor setup with our TS3 Plus dock

Are you having issues connecting two displays to your Thunderbolt computer simultaneously using the TS3 Plus dock? It might be the case that your computer has 2-lane instead of 4-lane Thunderbolt 3 ports. In order to connect two displays simultaneously through our TS3 Plus dock, you have to make sure that your computer has 4-lane Thunderbolt 3 ports to support a dual monitor setup.

You can recognize this issue if you are trying to connect two monitors through the TS3 Plus dock (one through the DisplayPort and the other through the Thunderbolt 3 port), but can only get one display to work at a time. This indicates that your Thunderbolt computer is using a 2-lane Thunderbolt 3 port. However, Thunderbolt computers with 2-lane Thunderbolt 3 ports could still support a dual monitor setup in some cases.

One way to go about this is to daisy-chain two monitors but this requires your monitors to have both an upstream and downstream port and could be done from either the DisplayPort or Thunderbolt 3 port on the TS3 dock. Another way would be to connect one monitor directly to your laptop instead of through the docking station.

Please note that some Windows computers are limited in this ability and we always recommend to check the specs of your computer to make sure it can support the amount of monitors you need. Therefore, when you’d like to install a dual monitor setup using our TS3 Plus dock, please be informed that it can only connect two monitors simultaneously if your computer has 4-lane Thunderbolt 3 ports.

As this information is usually not provided in the regular list of computer specs, please contact the computer manufacturer for further details regarding this.

In case we can help you with any further questions, don’t hesitate to contact us. We’d be more than happy to help you!

CalDigit's dock compatibility with new 16" MacBook Pro (96W)

As many of you have outed concerns about the new 16" MacBook Pro's (96W) compatibility with our TS3 Plus and USB-C Pro Dock, we would like to inform that both these docks are able to charge the new MacBook Pro 16" safely. The 96W power requirement of the new MacBook is only the maximum amount of wattage that it will need when under heavy load so connecting an 85W power source will not cause any damage to the computer.

We are working diligently to determine the best solution that will fit all Mac-based computer systems, including the new 16” MacBook Pro and its 96W power supply. While it is not difficult to increase wattage on our current docking solution, to do so reliably is another task entirely.

In the meantime, the TS3 Plus and USB-C Pro dock are going to provide 85W of charging and are still the best possible solutions for current and future Mac machines. We appreciate your patience in bearing with us and we will keep you apprised of any new developments.

Oh darn, I missed out on that 15% Black Friday Sale. I only just saw this thread, and had been looking around and researching on Thunderbolt 3 docks for my MacBook Pro. That would have been a good discount. Oh well.... hope CalDigit would offer a similar sale in the near future. Hint hint! brows.gif
