The Sky Crawlers (スカイ・クロラ Sukai Kurora?) is a Japanese novel series by Hiroshi Mori. First published by Chuōkōron-shinsha in June 2001 and spanning five books, it follows the journeys and tribulations of a group of young fighter pilots involved in dogfight warfare, and is set during an alternate historical period. The series is unlike other works by Mori, noted for his series of mystery novels. The art for the series is illustrated by noted mangaka Kenji Tsuruta.
The first book in the series was The Sky Crawlers, first released in June 2001.[1] A shinshobon (refurbished) edition of the book followed on October 2002, while the bunkobon edition followed on October 2004.[1]
The second book in the series, None But Air (ナ・バ・テア Na Ba Tea?), was released in June 2004, while the shinshobon edition for this volume followed on October 2004 and the bunkobon edition followed on November 2005.[1] The third book in the series, Down to Heaven (ダウン・ツ・ヘヴン Daun Tsu Hevun?), followed in June 2005, while its shinshobon edition followed on December 2005 and its bunkobon edition followed on November 2006. [1]
The fourth book in the series, Flutter into Life (フラッタ・リンツ・ライフ Furatta Rintsu Raifu?), followed in June 2006. [1] The fifth and final book in the series, Cradle the Sky (クレィドゥ・ザ・スカイ Kureidu Za Sukai?), will be released on June 25, 2007.
On June 20, 2007, it was announced that the novel would be adapted into a anime film, directed by Mamoru Oshii, which is slated for release in 2008.[2][3]
Animated by Production I.G., the film will be written by Chihiru Itō, feature character designs by Tetsuya Nishio, music by Kenji Kawai and will be distributed across Japan by Warner Brothers Japan. [2][3]
Mori had stated that he felt The Sky Crawlers was the "most difficult" of his works to adapt, and had given his consent to the making of the film after learning of Oshii's involvement as director. [2][3]
wikipedia is your best pal. And don't you wonder why the USians shows GITS as "Mamoru Oshii's Ghost in the Shell"?
da problem, i dun watch GITS. so i dun even know that USians shows GITS as Mamoru Oshii's GITS. neway, thxs for the info bout the show, u works better than wiki
The last time I watch jetplane anime from novel->anime conversion is Sentou Yousei Yukikaze. A nice short film with action CG. I wonder what this Skycrawler would brings, another quintet I see... 5 series...
Well, the movie is vintage Oishii, very philosophical and intriguing discussion on things like life, existence and war. If you don't like Innocence, then you won't like Sky Crawlers.
I love the movie for the record. Very much my style.
Innocense is a visual rape fest. Nothing philosophical about that. If there's anything philosophical, its from the mangaka Masamune Shirow, not Oshii. Same with Sky Crawlers where the material and "philosophy" comes from the novelist Hiroshi Mori, not Oshii. Oshii's films tend not to translate the original work well into film making it more of a boring visual rapefest.
And reading reviews online, people liked Sky Crawlers alot compared to Innocense. I think I will like it since I'm attracted to fighter planes and it borrows theme from Japan's WWII where young people were denied their right to be adults when they are drafted as expendable pilots for war.
Oh and I loved Jin Roh.

well i dun wan to spoil nething. but its has something to do with life, cycle of life, repetition. there is dog fight but its not really a major stuff. well the dog fight is amazing, basically i like plane fight, its been long since Macross Zero (Frontier just fail, kay) n totally show pilot skill rather than auto missile shiet or pin-point barrier shiet. n like most predicted, its more toward bout life than dog fightin, so if u expect lot of action stuff, dun watch it.
edit: the panther plane look mustang'ish.

sky crawlers not as good as expected gt too much room to improve this movies leaves alot question eg wer kildren frm?n those r show or war?
Perhaps the movie itself doesn't show much. Well, it's just based on one of the novels. This movie may have to be targeted for those who actually read the novels.

Ask yourself those questions.
The movie may give more questions than answers but it's Mamoru Oshii. He wants to make you think. Personally, i find it one of the best movies i've watched so far other than GITS which has an actual serious theme behind it.
they given a hint bout kildren, they are some sort of product manufactured for war, they dun grow old. once dead they are being replaced (with same person) the cycle keep on. as beginning of the show, that guy was killed n soon enough being replace by his other self. explanation arent needed as the show only tell briefly bout who they are n nothing more. that should be sulficient.
though thru out the show, i think the 'teacher' is no other but the original kannami.

GITS is better la , at least the movie let us think something meaningful eg "science vs god" but sky crawlers .....
Sky Crawlers is mostly slow and boring - but I think its absolutely fabulous.
The Sky Crawlers is more like an effort to understand life and find meaning. The Kildren spend their days repeating a dull routine, fighting for entertainment and ultimately die in the skies.
Oshii wishes to send message to the youth of today. What brought you to where you are now? Why are you doing the things you do now? What meaning does it bring at the end? Is there an end, and if you reach it, what is there?
The Kildren, especially Kannami, spends his days wondering if his life has any meaning at all. Suito, having survived all her late comrade goes through the worst suffering and she goes through the cycle of suffering over and over and over.
If you're not the type to read between the lines, Sky Crawlers is not for you. Simpletons like you should go watch Sky Girls instead.

Mamoru Oshii is telling YOU to go f*** your own mind. Think harder.
PS - I don't remember there being a mention of God in GITS. It's more of a man and machine thing like Matrix. Only less action and more story.
if u gt the artbook u will knw this , its not frm GITS but juz GITS mention abt it "If our gods and our hopes are nothing but scientific phenomena, then let us admit it must be said that our love is scientific as well" - Auguste Villiers de l'Isle-Adam's Tomorrow's Eve, 1886

Like i said in #lowyat, though The Teacher somehow broke the cycle, he too, cannot fully run away. He still ends up in the different company on the opposite side, shooting down other pilots as he did for Rostock.
We exist only for the entertainment of people, do we have feelings and if we do, what do we see in a future where we are forever to kill and be killed, to never have any memories, nor grow up.
I don't usually look for hidden meanings in a movie, but I thought sky crawlers are okay.

The good part is the struggle, the emptiness that some of the kildren bear. They aren't worried if they could get killed anytime in the sky, but because some have lived far too long they have began realize there is no meaning in anything in their life, but at the same time they are powerless to do anything - even if they suicide, they know they are just gonna get replaced by another "self". This strife is portrayed especially by the commander girl, and it is probably subtle enough that it could be easily missed.
The bad part about sky crawlers is that while it seems like a character driven show, all of the characters aren't really that well developed, and that you couldn't really feel a whole lot towards them. And the show leaves one feeling very empty (or at least I do), because it has no resolution - or a resolution simply doesn't exist.

I hope they have a series for this some how for GITS I like the 1st gits more, this 1 I feel its abit of a remake of GITS 2 in the sense of the slowness the clock the people looked abit like the motoko doll in GiTS2 too. Maybe cos I watched the Gits series before I watched the movie.
