With assumption lag you referring to is display feel laggy or intermittent freezing. currently looking at:

This happen to all laptop with integrated CPU and Discrete CPU. In your case is Intel and Nvidia.
1. You want to make sure the the external monitor is connected to the port with direct-discrete GPU.
2. After you connect to external monitor, restart your laptop.
3. If issue persists, you can try go in Lenovo command center or BIOS set the display only use discrete GPU.
