& Good day to the rest https://www.goal.com/en-us/news/3297/argent...of-the-bosteros Juan Roman Riquelme, number 10 (1995-02, 2007-): Only in Boca, and only for this remarkable playmaker, could Diego Maradona be relegated to second fiddle. In the Bombonera however it is Roman who rules the roost over the best player ever to step on a football pitch. Blessed with incredible control and vision and a right foot that seems trained to find a teammate no matter how unlikely the pass, Riquelme was voted the greatest player of Boca’s history in a recent poll. The 41-year-old had a brief stint with Barcelona in the early 2000, but never really got the chance to play at another elite club. This, however, does not negate his greatness at all. As an attacking midfielder, he possessed everything a team needed to break down stubborn defences. Talk of a deft touch, quick thinking, extraordinary passing ability and an eye for goal. Very few players really come close to Riquelme in this regard. In his prime, Riquelme not only dazzled with his intelligent passing, he demonstrated grace, flair, and elegance anytime he was on the pitch. He read the game so well he always knew exactly when to anticipate, take an extra touch or two, before threading an outstanding pass. For his greatness, many consider the Argentine to be the ‘last true no.10’ in the game. |

There aren’t players like Roman in football anymore, he was the perfect example of cadence inside a football pitch. There are many that we can choose from his repertoire, but we’ll keep the one we told you about and one he did backwards during a Copa Libertadores match. We miss players like Juan Roman Riquelme, they are the ones who made this sport even more magical than it already is. |
