Those fine folks over at Warner Bros. have sent Cinematical an official Speed Racer press release which provides a full cast list, as well as lots of plot info. Although it wasn't very difficult to piece together all the nuggets of information we've received over the past month or so, it is nice to see all things Speed Racer in one place. As expected, the meat and potatoes of the story will revolve around Speed's (Emile Hirsch) attempt to take down the powerful and corrupt Royalton Industries before its evil owner (Roger Allam) puts Speed and his family out of business for good.

The Mach 5, the vehicle driven by the protagonist Speed, will be an actual vehicle. Instead of being driven on pavement, it will be hung from a crane and have its effects be computer-generated. The film will also have a a "retro future" look, according to Silver.

Expect the Wachowskis to throw every cool things they made for Matrix into this movie biggrin.gif

i hope this will be a simple speed racer movie . i mean if using time bullet to make this movie pretty kinda ruin it i think . better it to be just normal . maybe use another concept besides the bullet time thingy ..

17 could be naked but cannot be in direct contact with a naked girl. tongue.gif

which was why the lap dance (best moment in the film laugh.gif ), that scumbag required a pillow in between his d*** and the girls' arse in the dry humping scene.

Mach 5 Go was so popular in Japan that many racing team, including one team in Japan GT painted their team colour in this colour scheme.

some more info of the original anime
マッハ Go Go Go
QUOTE
The characters and storylines originated in Japan as the manga and anime series Mach Go Go Go from the anime studio Tatsunoko Productions.

Mach Go Go Go was first created by anime pioneer Tatsuo Yoshida (1933–1977) as a manga series in the 1960s and made the jump to TV as an anime series in 1967. The central character in the anime and manga was a young race car driver named Gō Mifune (三船剛 Mifune Gō). Yoshida selected the names and symbolisms in his creation very carefully. The M logo on the hood of his race car and the front of his helmet stood for his family name Mifune, a homage to Japanese film star Toshiro Mifune (and not "Mach 5" as the dub would suggest). His given name Gō is also a Japanese homophone for the number 5 (the number on his race car). This is also represented by the letter G embroidered on his shirt. The names themselves constitute a multi-lingual wordplay of the kind that started to become part of the Japanese popular culture of the time. Yoshida got his idea for Speed Racer after seeing two films that were very popular in Japan at the time—Viva Las Vegas and Goldfinger. By combining the look of Elvis Presley's race car driving image (complete with neckerchief and black pompadour) and James Bond's gadget-filled Aston Martin, Yoshida had the inspiration for his creation.

rumours that the car physics for the CGI will be given to Image Space Incorporated, maker of the racing game rFactor

I'm glad Wachowsky played true to the original Mach 5 design. It'll be a friggin retard to remodel this legendary car. Thank god it wasn't Bryan Singer or worse, Joel Schumacher. Really hate those producers who think they know what is best for fanboys. Okay, okay....I can forgive Michael Bay for Transformer. happy.gif

Is not a kid movie. Hey even cartoon from Disney or Pixar...adult also watch la.

To keep the original of the movie i think this speed racer will be a great movie. must watch it.

Check it out....it was since 1966.

Christina Ricci on Speed Racer Sequel

Christina Ricci, who plays Trixie, Speed's loyal and ultra cool girlfriend in Speed Racer, is excited about the possibility of a sequel to the Warner Bros. film and working again with the groundbreaking Wachowski Brothers.

ComingSoon.net/Superhero Hype! talked to the star at the Long Beach Grand Prix recently about what she would like to see her character do the next time around.

"I would like her to do more action-y things because I had fun being out there. That was fun stuff," she told us.

Ricci raved about working with the brothers and laughed about how the cast begged them to start working on another "Speed Racer" movie as soon as they wrapped.

"Larry and Andy created a world that they love and created characters that they loved and are attached to. When we were all leaving, we were like 'write the sequel!' 'We want to come back'. And they were like, 'I know. I know. We're going to. Don't worry'. They were as sad for it to be over as we were."

When asked if she thought the Wachowskis would jump right back into another film she excitedly told us yes!

"Yeah, definitely. Yes, that's definitely the impression I got."

As far as how many sequels she's signed on for, Ricci was rather coy about that.

"I don't know. You don't have to sign up for them. It's more like if this movie does well, they'll make another one. But, I'm not really sure. I don't pay attention to that stuff."

In summary: if this first movie goes well, the Wachowski Bros are gonna make the sequel rclxm9.gif

From what I've seen and read so far, I'm pretty hyped-up for this movie... rclxm9.gif heck, I'm even more excited over this than Iron Man (even though I grew up watching them both). The CGi is so surreal, it's like you're in another world. After all, watching a movie is all about escaping reality right? This is going to be one heck of a rollercoaster ride... rclxms.gif

Ok, here's my take on it.

Now, I went in expecting the worst. I hated the trailer for one, and was ready to walk out of the theater with the worst spent 8 bucks of the day. However, I had the feeling that if this works, it was going to be pretty darn good. If not, its going to be absolutely rubbish. The good news, its done by the Wachowskis. Therefore, there was a chance they could make it work. And make it work they did. Its good. Its darn good. And its so unconventional and hyperkinetic that there was no way anyone can make a good trailer out of it. The scenes just don't work in trailer form. Its cheesy, but in a good and imaginative way. It looks like the future seen through the glasses of an LSD intoxicated dude in the 60s and rendered by Pixar. Its Roger Rabbit but with 3D cartoons instead. Yes, its garish, absolutely over the top, thoroughly gaudy and is probably the most excessive thing on film, ever. But it has the spirit and heart to pull it off. The story is pretty rudimentary but I feel it has an edge of sincerity. Enough to get the audience rooting for the movie (unless you are some high minded snob trying to intellectualize everything). The Giacchino score is great fun and uses the original Speed Racer theme to great effect (and in many variations too!). Definitely a fun movie, if totally unorthodox. Admittedly, its going to be a love it or hate it thing. It was clear from the outset that conventional critics were going to hate it. Yes, its not memorable, I won't defend it to the death and I'll probably find it 45mins too long on a repeat viewing, but its fun, sincere, cheery and light. There are far worse ways to spend a lazy hot summer afternoon these days. For me, I love it. ***1/2 out of ****

So how's the film.... its The Wachowski Brothers...

they tend to do the most bizarre stuff in films.

Its either an 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes or a 30% score for 'Speed Racer'...

Is the film worth it? Or just a cheesy film with ridiculous special effects?

Its candy. Big colorful sweet candy. And a lot of it. Its up to you to decide whether you want or still need some candy these days.

Burga - now craving for the Giacchinno score to tide him over till Indy IV arrives...

I didn't recognize him (i'm not big on Asian pop culture), and I thought he was just the token Asian dude until I saw his name in the credits.

Watched already just now. The most colorful movie I have ever seen, just like the original cartoon. laugh.gif Wachowski brothers once again bringing something new to movie visual effects.

But, just one thing that really distracted me; Racer X. His voice was so familiar, I tried to remember where I heard his voice before. Until he revealed his face.

Watched the movie adi... and man, i have to say... this movie rox, despite the colourful and childish cartoonish style of the movie...
overall the action, the drama, the CGI, the graphics is just outstanding... and it's funny too...
i like most of Speed Racer is obviously the racing scene... damn it's so cool~
Mach 5... 800 horsepower... roller-coaster racing tracks , not to mention Rain is in this movie...

if i hav the chance, i'll go for second round anytime~ rclxms.gif

I caught it yesterday too... I must say I seriously enjoyed it. don;t listen to critical reviewers, this movie was never meant to please them, it was meant to be ENJOYED, so go endulge yourself in the colorful goodness of Speed Racer. And my God, like 90% of the stuff in the anime is in it!

Loads of surprise laughs, over-the-top dialog (it's done on purpose like the cartoon!) and wonderful action, and yeah, AWESOMELY fast racing. Rain has a surprisingly big role, but I believe Racer X was recreated really well... I think I'm going to watch again to fully absorb it~

Oh, and by the way, Trixie is a guy's dream girlfriend~ wub.gif

same goes to me..like what squall and raptorclans said, this movie is superb ##big time..
i'd give it 10/10 if i could but u know how that varies from person to person..
talking about rain, i didnt see him playing so much rtole in the movie..not that much dialouge 'articulated' by him..so for those of you who hated him so much, i can say that he is not the reason for you to miss the movie...
p/s: seriously guys, this is a MUST WATCH movie...summore its value for money since the movie will play for around 2hours plus...

The problem is everytime this movie gets exciting, the director quickly jumps to a slow boring scene.. like wet blanket

Bullet time is as olde as time

Speed Racer is in the same vain as d*** Tracy. Its set in a cartoon world. the color, the action.... everything. I guess if one can accept Sin City, Speed Racer should be OK except its smack load with colors. I wouldn't call this a live action Speed Racer but real people in cartoon and its a great one.

From the trailer, i was afraid this one may be too "cartoon" to my liking but i am surprise. Take away all those "cartoon" i may not like it at all. the fight scene in the mountain was great.

BTW, Racer X is so demn cool...!!!

critics my friend, sometimes are people that watched to many movies that they can't see what the real life about then they keep mitching about the film being not realistic and emotional, psychological suffering enough when all they can do is just step out of the theater into reality coz they don't see the sufferings of the cruel real world with their own eyes outside the cinema after all those times watching movies that were made for people that had real life and as a mean for them to escape reality.

I'm probably gonna enjoy this movie when I catch it later. ooooh looks at all the colors rclxub.gif brows.gif. Me love cheese.

I came into the cinema with the expectations so low that I guess I will be blasting the movie on my way home (go there because friend force me to take them there).

But in the end.. I really love the movies man. The style (like when the commentator is talking.. 360 degree going over the screen laugh.gif ), the fighting scene (especially on the mountain and also the one where Speed's father tackle that 'non-jo' wannabe ninja laugh.gif ). And ofcourse.. the raacing scene is really fantastic. I came out of the cinema.. a satisfied man. smile.gif

Sure.. some part especially in the beginning where Speed talks to his family and so on.. makes me yawn man. But I overlooked it and don't mind too much about it.. since the other part of the movie have patch the weakness in it.

I like this movie.. I think I'll be watching it again.

I'm glad I read the reviews (which were bad ones) because I went in and totally enjoyed the movie. smile.gif

It's corny, it's colorful (obviously), it's shallow but fun, entertaining and creative.

I heard this films is like "way over the top", e.g everything is super exaggerated...

I kinda expect generally favourable reviews, but mostly negative response. Almost all reviews are negative.

This film and 'Get Smart' are the two riskiest movies this year. It could make or break. 'Speed Racer' seem to have fans who liked it, but generally, the movie had a thin plot-line and corny colour-fest.

And I haven't even watched it...

actually i heard they actually released the IMAX version and normal version at the same time... but u know lah IMAX malaysia, they never bring in the REAL IMAX movies, most of the time they just blow up the normal version of a particular movie to IMAX size, resulting in blurness (you can tell because be4 the movie starts, they will show "this is NOT an IMAX presentation). Movies like Transformers, Superman, etc had IMAX versions but we all couldn't see... sad.gif

Wish I could watch Speed Racer in IMAX... I was practically grinning throughout 3/4 of the movie... it was good, cheezy fun. Man I gotta plan my 2nd viewing... rclxms.gif

The story quite ok actually. With up and down. Sometimes quite dull, sometimes got scenes that world never seen before. At the end, it will become a legendary movie anyway. At least for Speed Racer fan. biggrin.gif

To my surprise the movie adaption of the popular anime SPEED RACER only receive a 35% rating at Rotten Tomatoes......

This is a bad sign, since the Wachowski brothers seems to be the perfect choice for this type of movie, Emile Hirsch is no bad actor either, he was praised for his role in In To The Wild and to prepare for the role, Hirsch watched every Speed Racer episode.

Should the people and I still watch it.....I think it will top the charts but may not be as big as TRANSFORMERS....

Was on my to-watch list of movies this year... then came the 'oh wow, fantastic!' fan quotes... then came the critics... then it all came tumbling down...

Too bad. I might just watch it some other time... I'm focused on Narnia, Indy, Batman, etc. etc.

Usually the worst movies for me are below 60%.... wow, this one is way below... I will find a reason to watch it and see how bad it is though...

Doubt if its 'that' good.... maybe fine, or OK, but not great...

Usually RottenTomatoes.com is a place where you get the idea of how good a film is... anything below 60% and I'm done with it...

Same goes for Rambo IV.... good lord

But I have to admit, Iron Man totally wins all films thus far this year ! thumbup.gif
In fact, it is the HIGHEST rated superhero film ever... take that Spider-Man 3 !!!

to make a movie like Speed Racer, i don't think there is any other way than doing it like the cartoon. Its like Astro Boy (which a CGI feature is coming). How in the world is someone gonna make a live action and turn it serious. the Brothers could have make Camaro the new Mach 5. The WRL could be Indy RL or Japanese GT... it'll make it all look real but you know what... the whole world will be going after the Brothers blood.

I don't think there is no better way to make Speed Racer than what we got now. Its a cartoon yes... too much color yes... but what do you expect from a movie when main character name is Speed Racer...!!!

I felt that the first bit of the movie, where its a juxtaposition of Speed's race and the backstory of his brother was exquisitely executed.

For summer movies, you have to go with your gut. I think POTC3 was better than POTC2 despite it scoring lower on RT. Across the Universe also only scored around the 50s but its one of my favorite films of 2007. Incidentally, Across the Universe is one of those films which just get better and better the more you watch it, as its glowing DVD reviews (where its often based on the respective reviewers second viewing or more) would attest. Speed Racer will probably be a love it or hate it. Worth a gamble for one of the nice surprises this year. Its just bizzare that I don't think there is any way a critic could defend it and maintain respectable credibility.

QUOTE(defaultname365 @ May 11 2008, 07:02 PM)
But I have to admit, Iron Man totally wins all films thus far this year !  thumbup.gif
In fact, it is the HIGHEST rated superhero film ever... take that Spider-Man 3 !!!

Surely that title goes to Superman: The Movie with a score of 93%?

Dunno, I grew up watching Speed Racer, but yet.... I was truly disappointed. Maybe because of OTT CGI was never my favourite or maybe because I feel that film adaptations never live up to it hype. I just feel it suck. Bad time

Box Office figure don't look good. Estimated slightly over USD20mil on the first week. This kinda movie need to do good on the first 2-3 weeks. Too "niche" to last for many week.

If the current momentum continue, SR2 don't look too rosy.

In fact, they're calling 'Speed Racer', Derailed Racer...

It had prospects - - The Wachowski Brothers, Fast Cars, Insane Action...

Heck, I really really wanted to watch this film... guess I have to tick-it off my movie list for this year... probably watch on DVD...

It was just over-done, over-exaggerated and completely off-the top...

Hey, some like it, and some done. But most don't like it.

The box-office figures (US) are not good...

"No, Speed Racer. No."
-Daily News Maine

"Speed Racer intends to convey a sense of heedless momentum, but it drags painfully.."
- New Republic

FINAL CRITIC VERDICT :
"The Wachowski Brothers have overloaded Speed Racer with headache-inducing special effects, and neglected to develop a coherent storyline."

I am pretty sure of one thing - this film is probably not as bad as 'Eragon'... (vomit emoticon here)

I am not a speed racer fans, and I never watch a single episode of speed racer animations before. However, I am very impressed with the movie. Good effects and story execution. Although some might say its abit too colourful but hey, its another different kind of movie!

perhaps, not much people will enjoy it though. Luckily my friend who been forced by me to watch it still enjoyed it.

I like the way they shoot and edit it. its different yet interesting. nice.

dude wtf, just watch the movie and be the judge k,
as goldfries said, critics are the last people you wanna listen to about judging movies.

but problem is, now that uve read the critics views, you;d go to the movies expecting it to be bad and of course, it would seem bad to you since you have already judged how the movie would be beforehand, just toss all the critics reviews aside and go watch the movie with an open mind k.

critic is only the writer's comment. it may not be like yours. heck... i love Starship Trooper and its also universally panned. if i were to listen to critic, i would not have watch ST at all...!!!

depends on how big your hearts is. Speed Racer is not everyone's cup of tea. As i have said earlier, its a cartoon with real people inside. everything else is cartoon. If you think you can handle that then Speed Racer is actually a nice ride.

hehe. lemme tell you la, nowadays i just read LYN - those who watched the show would give feedback. smile.gif those are good enough to decide.

i wouldn't other critics. that's the reason why they're called what they are. they are CRITICS.

let the box-office decide if you may. smile.gif if it's enjoyable, people will tell others about it.

For a movie that has a heart, it is so underrated. It has brilliant screenplay, visually stunning eye candies (Reminds me of The Cat in the Hat, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the likes.) and uber cool visual effects as expected from the brothers. Taking Rain aside, I'm pretty satisfied with the cast members' performance. I'm glad that this is somehow a fresh racing movie apart from all the street racing movies (It's always about the drifts, triads, yada yada yada). Please give this movie a chance and watch it.

I watched it last week, and i say it does the original speed racer anime justice (just like transformers and its older cartoon counterpart).

It was definitely refreshing and a good movie to enjoy and relax comfortably at your seat. Not much of a suspense in typical action packed movies, but it does good in entertaining you. the colours and themes used reminds me of austin powers for some reason.

thumbs up. Tastes of various people are just different. just like how pretty face, Mx0 and slamdunk was taken off from jump manga in japan when it reach the climax of the story line. Similar fate occured to Heist and the 4400 in US.

Definitely a movie to watch, and enjoy, and let your feelings out during the movie smile.gif. it'll be a noisy cinema for sure. smile.gif.

IINM, usually the studio who made a film doesnt actually see a cent of the worldwide gross. They get a one off payment from the local distributor and thats it. That is why the U.S. gross is immensely important.

For that kind of budget, you better be damn sure the movie is going to deliver... too bad

That aside, I regard The Wachowski Brothers as one of the most (in this case two) visionary directors - their style and trademark is undoubtedly fantastic, however it may not appeal to the mass.

another surprise that it only grossed $18.5 million in its first weekend and was well below studio expectations, due to the blockbuster-like production costs of the film........but maybe it can gain back its budget.....a pretty sad results to otakus....I think it gonna gross about 40 mil on opening but surprise surprise.....critical reception do count....

I find the movie was different from the anime version in terms of time setting, art direction and visual effects that is the opposite of the matrix (slow vs fast motion)hehe. i like the movie in almost all points that it does a good job in character develeopment, story and stunning visual effects but since this is a family film with a bit mature side to it i guess it's not as bad as charlie and the chocolate factory and the cat in the hat..but i hated that a few post production almost ruin the movie cause it reminded me of those who video edited Spy kids and the Advanture of Lava Girl and Shark Boy...i might watch it again since its funny and fun to watch.

BEWARE!!! headache-inducing effects during visual effects scenes

I honestly had more fun in Speed Racer than I had in Iron Man.

Burga - who thinks Iron Man is about as good as the first Spider-Man

Burga 2 - who thinks Spider-Man seemed better than it actually is because when it came out the world hadnt had a good comic book adaptation for over a decade.
