Hi all, i service my car at toyota service center, i wanna ask is it better to use 0 20w, or 5 40w?

I know recommended is 0 20w, but is it 5 40w better lubricant our engine ?

Well hybrid engine is a bit different compare normal engine.. there's 2 type of petrol engine, Atkinson and otto..
Most hybrid or maybe all using atkinson cycle engine which more efficient then otto cycle.. thus more fuel saving but it maybe have lesser tolerance due to its higher efficiency.. so stick with recommended engine oil to get the most out of it..

How old is your car?

Why do you think 5W40 would be better?

hmm, 0w20, not really suit ur car in our hot weather nation tongue.gif

the 20 at the end is means the viscosity of the oil when the engine reach its optimal operating temperature, so, the higher the number, the better the oil to stay in its oil form to lubricate the engine, but depends on ur engine, the higher the number, oso means thicker oil, engine will makan tenaga to crank, hence makan minyak sikit

get 0w30 for normal driving

Because service advisor asked me which one i wanna use, since there is some people required to use 5 40w for their camry hybrid.
i was thinking that why he asked me so, that is why asking here ...hahaha

Quite agree with u bro, better stick with 0 20w due to its engine system

Technically hybrid doesn't need as thick an oil cos:
1)Whilst in motion, IC engine is not operating ALL the time;
2)Whilst the engine is in operation mode, it very rarely exceeds say 3000 rpm like highway driving. Even then it's not continuous for an hour or so;
3)Hence, thicker oil film thickness protection in thicker oil is less 'obvious' for a hybrid than for an old school IC engine car .

You have a point in seeking thicker oil film thickness in 'extra' protection , whether or not it is necessary or beneficial in your context, more so when it doesn't cost you more .

Now from the $$$ point of view, I would personally go for 5/10W 40 of known brand Shell,Castrol,Total etc which are often times on promotion offer .... from online or hypermarkets.

Should you come across a xW20 or xW30 on discounted price offer , go for it.

In this case, IINM for UMW Toyota.. fully 0W-20 is cheaper then 10W-40 fully synthetic engine oil..

I did ask want to use the 0W-20 for non hybrid car eg vios, but its not recommended by Toyota SC (Subang Jaya)..

So why in the world they ask TS which oil to choose from?

All those ECO type engines will use 0-20. The non ECO ones would start at 10-30. 10-40 are for old 90s' engines where hybrid has not existed yet.

The thinner oil helps in fuel economy. And also higher tolerance designed engine should not use too thick oil. The main thing about new gen engines are ECO friendly.

Then I would stick to a lower cost 0W20 that suits a hybrid , although I'm a typical thickie .

If your car can accept 0W-20, it is suitable for those who drive normally and don't do a lot of spirited driving. 5W-30 for those who are heavy footed. While for continental turbo cars, 5W-30 are for those who drive normally and seldom spirited driving. 5W-40 for those who are heavy footed.
