Hi guys,

I need your advice whether is it worth to buy a second hand (used) car? Or is it I should stick to first hand myvi or honda city/jazz?

My budget is around 50k to 70k.

I am looking at volkswagen golf tsi (1.4 TFSI) or golf gti (2.0 GTI)

skip TSI. too risky. worth or not is relative to your own affordability.

I researched a bit on TSI too. A lot of DSG problem.. but that was few years back.. I wonder the same problem still persist with the DSG gear?

For 70k you probably can get the MK7 facelift TSI.
Pre facelift is around 40K.
VW Malaysia did do a recall to fix DSG problem for pre-facelift, so depending if owners follow up or busted the DSG before they did.
Suggest you discuss in Fast and Furious section. Here I think may disturb people.

So you have 50-70k to buy the car. Next question is how much have you allocated to repair and maintain the car after you have bought it?

This is VW we're talking about, more so if you are going for the GTi which - while more reliable than the 1.4TSI, is still an older car.

I think the main concern here is your maintenance costs. A brand new Honda/Perodua comes with free maintenance at least for the first 3-5 years. Your second hand VWs will not have it plus it will be even more prone to repairs given their age.

Your general maintenance cost for a continental car is also more expensive than Japanese and local cars. Have you compared the costs for service, wear & tear, parts and sort?

The GTi especially is gonna be costly on another tier. It's a sports car and it's not gonna be cheap to maintain. Road tax is the highest among your choices here, tyres are also the priciest at an average of RM500/piece (plus u can't be putting on ling long tyres right. Sports car wei, at leash PS4 then only can drive it to it's full potential hehe)
Petrol cost would also be the most expensive. With it being a higher segment than the rest of your choices, the prices for everything will automatically be higher.

Just like you, I too had thoughts of getting a GTi. But as what some people would tell you, think with your big head and not with your small head. I couldn't take the gamble, maybe you can. Take courage, my child.

If this is going to be your only car, my advice is don't buy conti. You can have conti's when you have a jap/local car as spare.

theres a reason these owners let go of their car and take a hit of 50% aft 2-3 years.. not worth taking their risks...

It all depends on a few matters, namely

1) Is TS a newbie to cars ? if yes, just buy a simple to maintain car like Myvi or City, dun go for gungho cars like VW or other contis.

2) Do you have a second car as a spare car cause contis when in the workshop might take a longer time to settle the issue due to parts or other reasons

But I can tell you once you have driven a conti [ & you wallet can afford to maintain it ] you would not want to go back to MDM , KDM or JDM cars anymore.

European cars are gonna cost u a fortune maybe a kidney or two.. But lifespan isn't getting longer so don't settle for a crap car.

If what u after is driving dynamics, handling and precision while in the same time u can afford the maintenance then go ahead with the VW. If not then stay with local / Jap. For your reference, Ford focus tdci mk2.5 alone can need 10k a year for maintenance, for a VW, probably much higher.

just get honda jazz or upcoming yaris hatchback..

peace of mind, good reliability.

you have to factor in maintenance after you buy the car as well for long term

i got a friend

as much as i love this friend

he stupid and listen to this used car salesman saying that the VW golf has very solid engine and smooth transmission

bought before CNY last year, 2014 make.

fast forward since christmas of last year, his transmission rosak

cannot change gear, if manage to change to D gear, speed cannot go above 40 something km/h

cold start car, have to keep revving until engine warm up (about 5 mins) then only the gear can change, and keep jerking

i thought he was joking, but he came over to my place the other day, even warm start the engine also still got trouble reversing from my car porch doh.gif

FYI quoted cost to "service" the gearbox by outside VW specialist workshop is RM6k, no guarantee

also, this isn't my first encounter with this issue, i have far more stories to tell, but this is my most recent encounter.

save your money.

If you are buying from a friend, thats much more reliable than used car salesman?

I always see "1 careful lady owner, seldom drive", "1 VVIP owner, weekends car".....
