KUALA LUMPUR, March 7 — Malays and Indians are more likely to experience discrimination when applying for jobs in the private sector, especially women of the two ethnicities, a survey by a think tank found.

The Centre for Governance and Political Studies said its study concluded that Malays and Indians face more hurdles to secure job interviews compared to Mandarin-speaking Chinese applicants who topped all callback rates from hiring companies.

The survey was an experimental study in which Cent-GPS researchers posed as different applicants from all three major ethnic groups, but with the same qualifications and other criteria deemed necessary to make them prime candidates.

“We found there is ethnic discrimination... Malays, yes, but the Indians suffer the worst,” Cent-GPS senior researcher Zaidel Baharuddin said at a media briefing here.

Kek always playing the victim card. Already the majority population and tonnes of affirmative action still not enough? Maybe you all should look closer as to why this kind of things exist.

The passport pics to the resumés were taken from the same person. The candidates all had the same physical features but were applied makeup to look the ethnicity of their resumé. Literally, the only difference between these seven resumés was their names & skin color.

In the resumés of these seven candidates, they all had the same degree, they all obtained the same CGPA, a Second Class Upper, they all graduated from a local private university, they all had a three month internship and they all can communicate in English, Malay and Mandarin.

All our candidates listed Mandarin as "intermediate" in their resumés. Yet Nicola and Gabriel dominated in callbacks from Mandarin-required companies. Nicola got a 55% callback rate whilst Thivakar got 9%.

"Mandarin requirement" is just a smokescreen to hire Chinese candidates.

It's up to companies or room tenants to hire or accept whoever they wants.

To use the phrase discrimination is not even correct.

Unless you're talking about something like citizenship or something like that, then there's something to discuss.

1. All 7 candidate = same person. Only Name and race is changed on paper
2. All candidate had the same resume. Literally,
3. and yet the callback rate is totally different

4. Even with mandarin, other races got far lower callback
That's the reality of our job market.
if people think this is new and just happen 10 years ago, think again.
Way back in 1960 (before NEP was introduced) , same thing happen. Ask any 60 y/o and they will say the same.
