Hi guys.. I'm thinking of registering a domain for my blog. and may be hosting it myself (the blog is currently hosted by blogspot). I first have these questions though

1) What's the different between hosting it yourself and by blogspot? is it the speed?
2) I'm quite comfortable with the blogspot user interface. I mean the "add new post via email", the "new post" etc. If I host it myself, is there a similar or maybe better interface included?
3) How about my previous post? can it be transfered to the new host? Or everything will be reset?

I'm sorry for the newbie question. Just gathering all information before I make the leap of faith. Thanx in advance

I can answer all that with one recommendation. Get yourself a .com domain name (host not needed), direct your domain name to your blogspot blog.
Blogger will still host for you, your previous posts will be there and you can get yourself you own domain name. How nice...

Just go to Setting and choose Publishing. You'll see a custom domain there. There will be the place to go after you have your own domain.

My thought exactly. I may try to do this. However just to be sure... are there any other benefit of owning a paid hosting for blog besides speed for local?

inserting ads would be no problem too? but how? i mean if the blog is hosted by blogspot, can we edit the source?

as far as i know, there's no problem adding ads or other script in blogspot. but only in template

If you are using blogger beta, even easier, just click template > Configure script / HTML and paste your ads code.

There's also an option to edit HTML under the template tabs

your answer isn't that accurate.

#1 - "not much diff" shouldn't be in there. speed is really dependant on the service provider, usually local is faster BUT that doesn't mean it'll always be. some hosting provider have a lot of clients in their "shared server" therefore resulting it being slow as well.

#2 - wordpress given by company? i suppose you're referring those with 1-click-install scripts like Fantastico. Fact is you can upload your own Wordpress files, you can use other blog engines like Movable Type and whatever else in the market

#3 - it's ok to create new one if there's not many information there. just copy and paste la. then update the date accordingly.

when i tried to register an account at blogger.com, it has two options, simple & advanced. which one should i choose if i want my blog to host by blogger since i can as well insert ads.

if you register with nuffnang.com.my for their advertisement program, you might get a good deal with their affiliate with exabyte. check here. (oh but it ends 30th june)

personally i aim for exabytes. why? a lot of good review.

Some paid hosting offers you your own email address also, which you can also integrate GMail if you like Gmail's interface more.

There are a lot of offers from paid hosters out there. If you prefer local, Exabytes would be good and support will be fast for Malaysians. One bad to host it local is that like last time the Taiwan quake, your blog will be inaccessible or slow to access from overseas.

I think the best would be hosted by a host, a foreign one which it's reputation is good. GoDaddy has a good rating though... Just my opinion...

seriously la. if you guys want to do things without wasting time - get something that hosts locally. host overseas CAN be slow depending on location. I've tried HK before. I've tried US before. I like M'sia. HK was quite ok. US was horrible - that also depends oh.

when it's slow, you'll spend longer time even just to upload or refresh a page. this to me is important as I modify my pages. last time i tried US server, sheesh want to play around with Mambo also wait forever.

another thing to consider is WHERE are your audiences? if they're international, then you should choose the place generally the fastest for them to access. if your readers mostly local, try get Malaysia or at least some country nearby.

another thing is most host give a 30-day period where you can cancel if not satisfied. make use of that.

2. Yes. Wordpress allows you to blog via email. Set a unique password and email. Write your articles anywhere and send them to the aforementioned mail. The articles will then be posted in the default (preset) category.

3. I'd say everything starts anew with a new blog, dude. Either you grunt it out copying and pasting old posts to a new blog, or wait for some Wordpress plug-in to be developed to bridge between Wordpress and Blogger.

2)in your opinion, how long is too long? i mean.. how long would you wait for a new blog (first time) to load before you close the tab?
