most powerful anti-virus is yourself. With the right kind of PC usage habit, you can get away without installing any antivirus. Because there are no antivirus in this world that is 100% fool proof. Best you can do is read about reviews of the few famous ones like,

The best way not get infected by virus - install a fresh copy of windows, never goes online, read mail, chatting. Never install other software than M$ products. Never insert other media CD,pendrive, floppy to your pc. YOU WILL BE SAFE FROM VIRUS |

I recommend Norton Antivirus 2007. It doesnt slow down my pc much. They claim to use tighter and shorter codes. But I feel it doesnt tax my pc as much as Norton Antivirus 2006.
