Hi, sorry for my noob quetions but hope you guys can help me out before i head to the apple stores.

Hi, finnally i've decided to get myself a MAC PRO 2.6ghz , for my video works & Maya... the package just fitted my ever small budget.

I was wondering, since the package in mac pro comes with only 1 GB (2x512mb) Ram, was wondering would it work if i buy

2 GB ( 2x 1GB) Kingston PC5300 DDR2 RAM 667mhz = Rm 115 eacg roughly. to add in my current MAC PRO installed RAM. So i would get 3 GB RAM running ?

1 GB(2x512mb) + 2GB(2x1gb) = 3GB

will it be advisable ? or it's better to have all 1gb rams in only rather then mix with 512mb rams & 1 gb rams.

thanks,
SUpermassive

laugh.gif you wish to get 2GB RAM for Mac Pro for RM115?
Check the spec again, the RAM for Mac Pro is not normal DDR2 you get in lowyat. It's FB-DIMM. Last check it should cost RM600, consider it's cheap if you get it below RM500.

And there's some article regarding RAM modules combination for the Mac Pro. It's advisible to utilise the 1st 2 bank only.

Added on June 13, 2007, 12:44 pmAnd I use this as my formula:

2x2gb: Low bandwidth, lower latency
4x1gb: High bandwidth, lower latency
8x0.5gb: High bandwidth, higher latency

Going to upgrade my RAM soon to 3-4GB.

Actually, prices have come down. See here:

http://www.transintl.com/store/category.cf...uestTimeOut=500

It's still much higher than regular DDR RAM though. You CAN utilize more than bank 1 and 2 but the main speed boost is by running in quad channel (i.e. with bank 1 and 2 filled).

This of course depends on how memory intensive your work is. If you run quad channel with 2 gigs (512Mb x 4) and you hit a memory bottleneck; you'd still have a speed boost when you add more memory to the remaining banks, the speed gain however will not be as dramatic as going to quad-channel.

Yeah, it has gone down quite a bit.
But 2Gb kit still hang around RM600-700 (with shipping from US in mind).

Tempeted to upgarde also... hmm... still waiting for nVidia 8800 series.
If I were to upgrade, the 512MB modules will render useless. Else I go for quad channel...
