Hi all,

This is a very informative thread - especially with the photos and videos!

We will be in Yogya for 6D5N over the New Year and I have a few questions that I hope some of you can help out.

1. Does anyone know if the temples (Borobudur, in particular) be closed on 31st Dec / Jan 1st? Google results state that Borobudur is opened daily with no mention of public holidays. Is it safe to assume that that means it will be opened?

2. We are travelling as a couple and would prefer to rent and car and self-drive rather than have a driver as we prefer the flexibility and privacy of self-driving. Is self-driving there doable (tentative itinerary as follows) or are there too many kampung roads to negotiate?

3. Our tentative (and skeletal) itinerary is

Day 1 - arrive at airport mid-afternoon, taxi in to Yogya and jalan-jalan / makan-makan including browsing on Malioboro. Maybe get a massage to relax after the flight.

Day 2 - pick up rental car and day trip out to Prambanan, Ratu Boko and surrounding attractions

Day 3 - Explore Yogya and it's attractions and head off to Borobudur in the evening

Day 4 - Borobudur

Day 5 - Dieng Plateau and then head back to Yogya

Day 6 - Day trip out to Solo

Day 7 - Free and easy before flying out (after returning the rental car of course!)

1) Taxi willing to take me from Jogja to Gunung Kidul area? It's around 2 hours away I think.

2) In Gunung Kidul area, I'm interested to go to Pindul cave, sri gethuk waterfall and pantai indrayanti. Are they within walking distance?

Based on map of these places on the Yogyes site, they don't look like walking distance. I'm also interested to go to the Gunung Kidul area - either Sri Gethuk + Rancang Kencono or Gua Jomblang + Luweng Grubug. If you find a good rate for a driver to to go Gunung Kidul please let me know.

If you can ride a motorcycle, this blog post might interest you as it has pretty precise directions how to get to Sri Gethuk. Unfortunately, I can't ride one sad.gif

I dunno what rate is considered good. I find this website very useful http://www.yogyes.com/en/yogyakarta-car-re...car-driver-fuel , u click on the price list got many different tour packages.

Thanks. I sent messages to three of them requesting a quotation via that site but so far none have replied. I guess have to call ...

Hi! I'd appreciate it if you could let me have your previous driver's contact. Definitely prefer to go with someone recommended rather than picking one out of the blue.
