As per title.

I intend to buy a desktop for my daughter, been actually wanting to build a low end desktop for school work and some light gaming.

I, myself, on the other hand using i5 4690 + GTX960 + 8GB + 240GB SSD for gaming (witcher 3, just cause 3, the new tomb raider series, mostly medium settings) and lightroom/photoshop.

So I am wondering should I just give my daughter my current cpu and buy a new pc for myself, or just build a cheap desktop.

So my question is:
1. any spec that cost about 3k (same price as I built my current one few years ago) that is significantly better than my current pc? I mean high-highest settings for most modern games. (excluding monitor, keyboard, mouse, speaker)

2. any spec that cost about 1.5k (excluding monitor, keyboard, mouse, speaker) that is good for some light gaming and Microsoft Office. She used to play Guild Wars 2 @ lowest settings @ 800x450 on my ancient laptop with GT620M, so anything better is a huge improvement already)

It's been years since I last built my own pc so I am very much outdated already, very much appreciated if any sifu can throw some suggestions. =)

1. At RM 3k, you could opt for Ryzen 5 2600 with RX 580 8GB and that should be a great boost for 1080p gaming.

Here's a comparison video... the difference between 2600 and 4690 non-k would be just as big if not more... and the RX 580 is much stronger than GTX 960

2. Consider Ryzen 2200G without GPU at that price point

both seems viable. for long term I think buy 2600 with rx580 is better choice. but for my daughter usage, 2200g seems like more suitable.. dilemma dilemma..

anyway, thank you bro for sharing thumbsup.gif

If what you have is enough, just invest in a 2200g rig for your daughter as a present (exam or birthday).

If you want better gaming then just get your 3k rig and let her have your current setup which is pretty much still decent for medium gaming. And she will have less excuses that PC too slow lol.

A compromise is just to buy the 2200G set, give her the gtx960 then get an RX 580 for yourself.

I actually rarely game for quite a while now, mostly during weekend or when I damn bored. So I think I will take your advise by getting her 2200g first. Then when I really need an upgrade, I will pass her the 960 and get myself something better.

Thanks bro. however, do you happen to have an idea of the parts that is reliable while not too expensive for a decent 2200g build?

Hehe, been saving up for new lens so every cent counts. biggrin.gif

If you daugther "light gaming" can handle by HD4600, you could just let her have your I5 4690 with igpu, so you could build a new one with your GTX 960.

4 coree processors are reaching its limit with this year's games....6 core would be a safer bet
