if you lose the book, all your information is lost.
if your shelf breaks, you could doom to kingdom come.
hosting your own blog is just a step forward to experiment more with the blog. try other development stuff like different plugins provided by Wordpress. themes you think could work with it.
I find Blogger's templates now more difficult to customize because of their variable system. It's downright confusing. More than PHP or Perl in MovableType. LOL!
Why do you think you need to host your own blog?
