grab's t&c serves 2 parts:

1) awareness: spending at illegal/high-risk* merchants hence the b&w t&c to outright notify users first (guess not many will read through anyway)

2) disclaimer: grab doesnt want to take liability, if anything happened to your money and/or transactions conducted by these illegal/high-risk* merchants

*high-risk can be due to nature of business or merchants with potential of high rejection/return/refund to happen.


these can be mitigated during onboarding of merchants into grab's ecosystem. they can try to filter as much as possible, but grab may missed some out (eg insincere merchants)

to grow business, they need to offer more payment options (eg ewallets)

but to offer those, need to pay MDR which would eat up their margin

the MDR/fee is always the contention for businesses to adopt "new" payment channels, be it cards or ewallets.


probably they went for grabfood delivery to category for delivery service (instead of incurring the cost themselves)

GHL enables GrabPay across Shell petrol stations | The Edge Markets

KUALA LUMPUR (April 20): Payment solutions provider GHL Systems Bhd has enabled GrabPay e-wallet acceptance at Shell petrol stations nationwide in Malaysia.

In a joint statement today, GHL said the move further widened the cashless ways consumers can pay for products and services.

It said the collaboration between GHL and GrabPay to include the GrabPay e-wallet as a payment option at Shell stations nationwide will further encourage the adoption of cashless payments.
