If you put a 667 ram into a 533 slot it'll downlock and nothing is damaged. I even used a 667 mhz RAM into a 533 mhz RAM slot before and it's fine. biggrin.gif

I think that too. I explain that to him but then he counter attack by saying that although the ram will downclock but it will the ram will keep pushing to 667mhz whenever you start your lappie? rclxub.gif anyone can clarify these?

NO, it will run at slowest of them two, no damage taken, I've been mixing different RAM speeds and timing without them even dying (DDR, SD RAM etc). If he still arguing slap your laptop to his face real hard

tat is absolutely myth, ur friend may not know much about hardware, but act like he knowing alot (just like Mr. Wall-talker).

u can use the 667mhz memory, but, from wat i saw in the technical support section, alot of user whose mobo (in ur case, laptop) support highest 533mhz ram, there faced problem with their RAM timing when use with 667mhz ram, and often cause instability. they finally have to adjust the timing manually.

It wont damage at all, if you scare, just switch the setting at bios to run at 533 spd, 667mhz ram is having the configuration of 200mhz,266mhz,333mhz settings. means it can run on either one of those 3, not tied up at 333mhz

my home athlon xp, the mobo only support 333MHz ram. i fix it with 1G DDR400 (OC the cpu and bus speed some more) and it run for a year plus already, but still alive and kicking.

for DDR2, i never try b4. but can see alot of user suffering some issue when they plug in higher speed RAM. but was solved when the timing was adjusted perfectly. maybe their pc will blow after sometime, shuld pm them after a year or 2. whistling.gif

That was sarcasm.

Read the part on initialization and mode select. Anyways the only thing that changes is the rate at which the clock signal is given. I don't see how it'll blow up anything.

majority of laptop BIOS cant adjust timing manually. in this case, i dont think it is a good idea to get a 667mhz for ur laptop, unless if u can bring it to the shop there and the shop keeper is kind enough to swap it with a 533 if the 667 couldnt work.

Ram, long term spoilt? if it doesn't work, probably it will not work in the 1st place. So it's a myth.

Should be no problem for the faster ram to run at 1 step slower speed. so the 667 should be ok.

The other concern is Dual Channel issue. Dual channel will only work if you have identical ram sticks. So if you have inside your lappy one 533 module, and you add another 667, you get bigger capacity, but maybe lose abit of speed advantage, but maybe not noticeable .

uhm, TS, mind to say out your laptop specs?
and if I recall correctly, no laptop in the mean time does neeed DDR533 either, even the latest Santa Rosa have 800mhz bus speed only need DDR400, so the ram manufacture need to produce new DDR2 with frequency DDR400 to match the proc? In case the DDR533 ram run at DDR1066 will ruin the laptop? biggrin.gif

Sure it is not true. I guess many of you did not get empire23's joke there.
Read the Jedec whitepaper which he sent you the link, there will not be any damage.

If your know it all friend keep telling you arguing that it will be permanently damaged, then just tell him that ya, someone even told you that your lappy will become like a time bomb, explode any time.
