Boost and Shell Malaysia collaborates so you can fuel up your vehicle via e-wallet

Boost took another step further to up their game, this time in collaboration with Shell Malaysia to bring cashless payment to petrol stations.

Thanks to the partnership that had just started in April, Boost users can now use their Boost e-wallet to make payments at selected Shell stations. They can purchase food and beverages in the stations without needing to use physical cash, and the same applies to putting fuel into their vehicles.

Despite the short amount of time the two companies has just started collaborating, Boost is already available in 800 Shell stations in Malaysia. To celebrate the collaboration, Boost users will get a RM5 cashback whenever they pay at Shell station with their Boost e-wallet with a minimum spend of RM40. This promotion will last for a full month, from May 14 to June 14.

So if you’re living a cashless lifestyle, you can always download Boost app from App Store and Play Store and fuel up your vehicles at Shell stations that support cashless payment via Boost e-wallet.

OMG...why not implement it into their POS system? Since there's also a handheld scanner which will make everything easier...

Makes me paranoid when seeing that they're using a separated e wallet terminal, before even experiencing it I'm already feeling that I'm gonna hear BS excuses from the cashiers (especially those that aren't locals).
*
integration directly into the POS takes time and money, let alone the existing infra might not support those "canggih" stuffs biggrin.gif

If KK Mart can do it that way, I don't see why Shell can't.

Unless KK Mart really way more "canggih" than literally most of the merchants that accept e wallets.
*
it depends.

some have in-house developers to kaotim the dev, some using external POS vendors which may be non-local eg based in Singapore, etc

may i know what happen to your boost account balance if there is a refund of RM1400 but your existing boost balance already having some amount of RM500 ?
how will the 1400(refund) + 500(balance) reflected since there is a wallet limit of RM1500 ?
*
get boost to clarify.

some possibilities...the wallet limit could be a hard- or soft-limit.

if hard-limit, diedie wallet balance cannot be >rm1500, your refund may be stucked/failed. more headache to initiate discussion with merchant & boost.

if soft-limit, possible wallet balance can temporary hold >rm1500 after refund amount received. however, this will pose a risk to boost in explaining to BNM why they are breaching the condition of getting the large-purse license. also, if the app cannot display >rm1500 balance, you cant access the excess money as well.

it all depends on how the policy-control is set, from front-end app and/or backend wallet.

only boost can advise the policy in handling this situation.

because maybank just revised thier mb2cards t&c (wonder if they did any hidden stuff towards boost cashback), but since lalachong received his cb, then i think should be no problem
*
if u read the T&C revision, you would know the changes doesnt impact boost per se, unless mbb identify boost as "utilities" or boost suddenly changed to "utilities mcc".

only to double-triple-xxxxx confirm is on 2 July by verifying June cashback for boost reload using m2c amex during weekends.

It's not wise for e wallet companies to charge MDR from their merchants for the time being, there are still many flaws that need to be improved and fixed when it comes to using e wallet (from user side and also merchant side), there's a reason why many merchants don't mind signing up to accept e wallets because they just gotta do the basic procedures and they're all set.

So e wallet companies do have to sacrifice some money at some point...

Wait until it becomes a thing here, then they can start charging MDR as little as 0.1%, and not more than that.
*
it will be charged regardless. that's the whole point of making revenue from merchants.

it's like asking visa/mastercard dont charge mdr to bank, then bank dont charge mdr to merchants for signing up card terminal.

no mdr now is promo/time-limited and just to acquire merchants, build the market/base. hopefully merchants are aware of this mdr t&c before getting "shocked".

ewallet mdr is used for operational cost and revenue, and usually is lower than traditional mdr from bank.

mdr from merchant is small because the savings they gained like reduced/no pilferage (coz no cash handling), no cost to travel to bank, cheaper than card terminal, easy to setup (no overhead cost, just use smartphone) etc .... essentially, cashless from end-to-end

boost/tng can (temporary) bear without mdr because they have their deep-pocket funding. everything is limited. sooner or later they need to monetize somewhere.

Now, Boost 0% MDR (some said 0% until July only, then 1% mdr), Touch n Go 0% SME MDR ZERO for Individual, Enterprise, 0.8% for Sdn Bhd.

As far as GHL is concerned, TnG 0% (until end of May), 0.5% after the promotion, Boost 0% (until end of 2019), 0.5% after the promotion

GrabPay - 1%, FavePay - 1%

Charging below 1% is the way to go...

What I'm worried is that the merchant acceptance will be reduced once they impose the MDR, especially with the smaller merchants (food stalls, restaurants, stationery shop etc.) cuz some probably wouldn't wanna bear with the charge when their business isn't doing well...

Hence, that's probably the reason why only bigger merchants accept Grabpay and Favepay.

Just hoping that more and more people will start using e wallets in their daily lives, as the finance ministry reported that the rate of people using e wallets normally is only 10%, if I remember correctly.

*
reduction in acceptance is bound to happen when new policies/charges/technology is introduced.

with growing demand, acceptance would grow back too eventually, albeit slowly.

boost' merchant acquisition team also to educate the merchants on the USP/benefits of using ewallet for business, even with the MDR, it's still a viable choice to grow their business too.

it's not an actual charge. it's a preauth charge to make sure the card is valid/active.

it will be released back.
