Given today's tech and expertise, this had to be one the easiest Disney classic films to adapt to a "photorealistic computer-animated" film.
Curious, I decided to read a few reviews on it...
The biggest issue with the film (and this comes as a surprise to me) is the scene-for-scene recreation of the original right down to Simba's sneeze.

The trailer showed this but who knew it would be the entire film...
This was seen as a "lazy" remake instead of injecting new ideas or scenes (Jon Favreau's very own "The Jungle Book" is a great example on how to do it right).
Further reviews state the removal of the Hyena's march and the song that went with it and the more elaborate scenes such as "I Just Can't Wait to Be King" completely ignored.
The CGI received critical acclaim and a big contender for the Oscar in this part, but the characters lack facial animation since Disney opted to go the realistic route.
They turned up the technical aspects to an 11, but left everything else exactly the same.
If you have kids that haven't seen the original animated film, they are going to love this. For most of us, it'll be akin to a video game port from "console" era to "next-gen PC era" instead of a proper remake - - prettier but nothing else to it.
Might skip this I guess... unless I'm forced to tag my niece/nephew to the cinema
