I'm sorry for your loss, was he losing any weight? Check the teeth too in case its overgrown... Some of my gerbils also died at 1 year plus, I suspected they chew the wire I used to hang my bottle too much until it became a bit rusty and poison themselves, but not sure also.

Sometimes it can happen for no reason, just pay attention to the other gerbils, if one day they seem to be losing weight or sleeping a lot then have to monitor closely.

I think you can buy the hobo brand mite spray. Its available in a few pet shops like 88 petsmart. Its a yellow bottle with a pic of bird on it. There is a version for rabbits as well I think but better use the bird one for gerbils. You can spray it on the gerbils and also the bedding, but not directly on their food la.

"The gerbils may find space preferable to returning to Earth - several are to be dissected upon their return."
Too bad about the dissecting part though

QUOTE(crazymouse_yyh @ Sep 17 2007, 12:20 AM) Yah, he had a scent gland tumour. I found him buried under the wood shavings.... his sons must have given him a burial. Bandit, the grandpa and greatgrandpa of so many.... How was the tumour when he died? Did it get infected already or something? neo's scent gland tumour is still there, although somehow shrunk a bit, I heard that usually it won't kill a gerbil unless they start biting at it until it gets infected.

mites doesnt cause wounds like that suddenly, more likely your gerbil injured itself. You can use iodine for the wound and monitor he gerbils to make sure they are not fighting.

QUOTE(-Abtic- @ Sep 19 2007, 03:26 PM) Hmm, I notice my black gerbil has yellow spot at the middle of its belly. Is that his scent gland? It's like hair scalp :/ Its the gerbils scent gland. Males have it... its a normal thing. Supposed to look like a patch of hard skin. This post has been edited by jaswwp: Sep 19 2007, 04:13 PM

If the others are bullying him, put a split cage in and let him recover first.

Yesterday something a bit weird happened. I gave my gerbils a bit of bread for breakfast, then I cleaned their tank, threw away all the shavings with the leftover food and wash it.... then refill the tank with clean shavings and straw, then I went to clean the other tanks... few hours later I came back to that tank.. then I saw the pieces of bread still there in the tank.

QUOTE(BlueHeng @ Sep 23 2007, 01:26 PM) I guess you didn't notice the bread lor.. perhaps a few of your gerbils still having it in their mouth.. just biting it but you can't see since their mouth is at the bottom? I transfer my gerbils into another cage when I was cleaning their tank lo... tat time mouth not holding anything, so its a bit of a mystery, haha
