Hi, could anyone give me some advice or solution to my networking issue?

Currently got an Asus RT55UHP on the first floor. Running speed test on the same floor gets me close to the claimed 100Mbps. On the 2nd floor walkway I'm also getting it not too far from those results as well. My problem is entering the bedroom which I suspect is the door, I'm immediately getting down to around 30Mbps or slightly less. Signal is also obviously weaker and tends to drop occasionally. I had no choice but to put a TP LINK range extender just to keep the signal up, however the speed is now down to 15-20Mbps.

It's kind of hard to bridge a router from outside the room on the second floor to another router into the room via cable as the space below the door doesn't allow it.

I've been checking out other wireless options including mesh systems. But I just don't know if they will work past the door. Or are there options that are strong enough to boost the signal through the door. I'm mainly trying to get my full connection speed inside the rooms on the second floor as the ground and first floor are fine.

Assuming budget is not an issue what would be recommended? I wouldn't want to buy something only to have the same results in the end.

Any ideas on the Netgear Nighthawk XS as an add on to the Asus? I also don't use my landline or Hypptv so if it causes any issues with that it really doesn't matter.

Thanks for all the help in advance.

Mesh Wifi will solve your issue. If you want something good, get the Deco M9 3 pack. Your problem will be solved. Don't bother getting an extender or powerline. Alternatively, go for the TP-Link AC3150 v2, if you prefer a single router.

Oh ok, would I be able to add that on to my router or does that come with it's own router?  Also would the TP LINK be sufficient enough to cover all 3 floors providing full signal to the rooms as well?

You can just plug it into your BTU. Three floors? That is a bit difficult. You might need more nodes ie two packs of the 3-pack of Deco M9, which would be pricey unless you can wire cable directly to each floor and set up an AP on each floor.

So as in not use my Asus Router anymore? I read somewhere that these nodes could connect to existing routers? I mean either way is fine by me as long as I can solve the problem. Anyway ordered 1 set of 3 packs and will see how that goes. I don't mind getting more nodes if required and am able to get close to my full internet speed.

Cables are going to be pretty hard as the distance is a problem as well as location of power sockets. But lets say assuming I do not need strong coverage for half of the top floor and position the node outside the room or inside the room would that work? I'm not sure if these nodes would have a problem receiving the signal through the door or if it would be better outside the door and try to transmit through.

It can still use your existing router if you want. Just set it up in AP mode.

Hi SilentVampire.

So finally got my M9 plus. Initially tried to set it up as a router, connected directly to the modem however every time it gets to the setup part where it asks you to connect to the new wifi network, the node LED goes red solid the moment my device connects to it. Thereafter the internet test will fail. I've tried using a different node as well as setting to PPPoE and filling up the account details as per unifi however it still fails.

Anyway decided to try it as an AP so tried plugging it into the router and now it's working fine. Getting blazing fast speeds in the room too. I noticed that I had to move the node on the top floor around to get the best speed in the rooms. As they are on AP mode now are there any other settings I should change? Only one I changed so far was Fast Roaming to on. Don't know if it actually works as don't see much difference whether on or off.
*
That's weird behaviour. Did you select the Unifi profile? It probably need VLAN tagging. Nothing else I can think of.

Yeah I did under VLAN to on. And then selected TM Unifi.

Not sure what went wrong honestly. Doesn't sound like it should do that.

Btw adding one of the nodes downstairs I'm only getting around 50Mbs. Any ideas?
*
It probably defaults to 2.4GHz when you are downstairs. It auto selects the strongest frequency.

Oh ok. Also I know that 5g is way faster, but why is it that the speed tests on 5g always show ridiculous speeds? I'm getting 150-200Mbps on it. Which is obviously not true since I'm on a 100Mbps connection.
*
It is probably measuring the max speed achievable? Did you try speedtest on other devices?

Yeah all showing the same on 5g, but on 2.4g the results are more realistic.
*
Hmm, you are probably getting higher speeds then haha.

Hi All, would like to get an advise.
Does Tenda AC18 able to deliver ~800mbps over 5Ghz wifi?
*
Yes, but your device needs to support it as well. You need at least a 4x4 MIMO device. Mobile phones and normal laptops NIC won't be able to do that.

Perfect bro...i believe S8 should be able to support the MU-MIMO since there is a mix and match update. some web saying s8 able to support 4x4 MU-MIMO and some 2x2.. smile.gif
*
More likely S8 is only 2x2 MIMO.

Maybe a TV analogy is easier to understand.

The station broadcast in FullHD signal but your ancient TV can only receive normal signal. Even if the tower broadcast in 4K, your old TV won't see all the benefits. Same condition to your phone WiFi speed.

You need a better phone to reap the full benefit. Kinda surprised you guys are not trained on this considering how Maxis advertise their so-called Max-perts. laugh.gif

Exactly. I thought he would have known all this lol rolleyes.gif

Yeah, I think they give that standard response of 5G caps at 200mbps cause that's what their router max speed allows them to.

However, I purchase some more expensive routers (tried 3 routers) and my speed at best is 250mbps, so I'm not sure how some people are able to get 500-600mbps wifi speed?

It depends on device as well.

Hi, this is the first time I'm troubleshooting with these technical subject. I have just recently found out that my family has been subscribing a much higher speed package while receiving much less speed in actual reality. A bigger part of the reason this issue was left alone for long time was due to miscommunication as they only knew that they have upgraded the package but can not remember which one is it now and I always thought the speed was only a little lesser that what it should be.

Now that I just checked with TM point it turns out that 500mbps is actually the subscribed package. The speed we usually been having were around 30~110mbps download speed depending on the 2.4G or 5G channel was used. I just called 100 just now and was told that the 2.4G channel caps at around 100mbps while 5G caps at around 200mbps. So this leads to me confusing right now and started checking to this subject...

The router we are using right now is a router that was just resubscribed from TM around 1~2 years ago (not sure model name). In order to achieve higher speed, do I need to changed to another router model? also why are they giving us a model that cant achieve the speed of what they should be giving...? sad.gif
*
Just saw your message, and yes, you will need to change router. To learn more, read ALL the green text in the link of my signature, and the reason why they give you that model is because they only support and guarantee that you will get the speed on wired connections, NOT WiFi.
