I am having issues with security camera coverage for my terrace house because my Wifi router is too far away from the cam.

I am considering buying a new Asus RT-AX86U Pro to upgrade as the main router and use the old RT-AC86U as the AiMesh node.

Is it possible to use the Guest Network features with the AiMesh node?

You will be surprised by how strong is the RT-AX86U Pro

Might not even need the RT-AC68U

Hmm, I guess i can upgrade the router first and test the reception. The biggest problem with the security cam position is that its outside and behind a big ledge so it keeps disconnecting randomly from the 2.4ghz wifi.

The plan for me was to install the old router at the ground floor eth port since that is very near the cam instead.

What's the good price for the RT-AX86U Pro? I am finding around 900 ringgit on shopee.

Yea, the AX86U Pro is leaps and leaps ahead of the AC68U, in fact AC68U is totally outdated now, the only thing still good about it is the reliability and stability

I am an owner of a 10 years old orignal AC68U which still works, bought at around RM8XX back then IIRC

I didn't track prices but check lazada as well, usually quite good deal on special day

Yeah, only reason I am using the AC86U still is because I mainly connect using Ethernet and the "WiFi" has always been "good enough" for the rest of the house even though there are some really blatant blind spots on the ground floor (the router is on the first flr).

It has served me pretty well though for the last 7 years!

Anyways, found a good deal on Shopee for the RT-AX86U PRO from the Asus Official Shop, after all vouchers its RM 851 so about the same as the price for the AC86U back in the day. Hope it lives up to the quality!

Got the new router, pretty quick delivery.

Did a simple check of all the functions and luckily everything seems okay. Relatively recently made too, production year of 2025. Loaded with a old firmware though, dated from last Oct.

A quick test of the default wifi SSIDs it comes OOTB shows almost 10db diff of reception between my current router and this one using WifiMan app around the house, including the weaker areas, definitely might not even need the old one if it's this strong already.

Gonna use the long weekend to set up stuffs, still need to work from home this week.

Hmm, been using my new Asus router AX-86U Pro for a month, with latest Merlin firmware, but lately found out a weird issue.

Currently I am using 2 wired ports on the router, 1 device has manually assigned IP (which is my main PC) and the other port is used for WFH laptop which just uses DHCP auto assign.

I found out that when I turn off the main PC, the router will stop working about 6-8 minutes later and become entirely unresponsive with no WIFI or LAN connection possible. I have to power cycle the router to make it work again.

It is quite an inconvenience because I will turn off the PC every morning to go work and my family members have to power cycle the router to make things work again. Anyone know or face this issue before and should I RMA the router?
