Hi Sifu

My current setup is this

Time 300mbps in a condo (2k sq ft). For discussion, I'll divide my house into just two rooms. Room 1 (Router and modem) and Room 2 (Work room).

Currently using Huawei Modem and D-Link DIR 650L Router in Room 1. There is a Aztech Powerline in Room 1 connected to Room 2, where a Lan cable is connected into my PC.

Would like to have WiFi in Room 2 (by way of Powerline into an Access Point/Router) and am planning to get the AX20.

Questions:-
1) Which Router should I use in Room 1? AX20 or DIR-650L?
2) Would a mesh network work better (faster speed / coverage) than the above set up? I've been using powerline for a while and am very happy. No issues at all.
3) Can a DIR 650L and AX20 be converted into Access Point?
4) Do I need to upgrade my Huawei Modem? No one seems to be talking about Modems

Thanks

Hello, you are mentioning that you are using TIME 300mbps?
Time Fibre doesn't have 300mbps plan only Unifi has that plan.
You may get the Mesh Setup. It is faster and comes with single SSID as you don't need to keep switching different WiFi every time when you are walking around.

Deco M9 Plus Twin will be suitable for your scenario.

Thanks

Thanks for the quick reply. Oops its 500 mbps.

A mesh network would be faster than powerline and ethernet? If I use an access point in Room 2, then I don't need to worry about switching WiFi.

Sorry if I'm a bit too inquisitive on that but just want to do some research before investing.

Yes, Powerline and Repeater have limitations.
If you use Mesh System will better than Powerline.
If you plan to extend via LAN Cable from Room 1 to Room 2 then using access point will help.

Some Powerline have limitation of speed up to 100Mbps only.

Thanks

Thanks. M9 seems a little out of budget.

Which would u recommend?
1) TP Link Deco M5
2) Maintaining my current powerline setup (my powerline is Aztech 500 Mbps) but getting a good WiFi 6 Router. I'm also checking with TIME if they can upgrade my router for free because it's only supporting a max of 300 mbps for 2.4 ghz

Thanks!

You can get the free Mesh WIFI when you renew the contract.
Mesh Router cannot work with Powerline

Deco M5 is sufficient but M9 Plus will be sufficient.

Thanks.

Thanks, will go with the Deco M5! I just did a speed check on my PC (connected via LAN / Powerline) and it only yields 14 mb (download).

Great. Try to setup without Powerline when you bought the Deco M5.

Thanks.

By the way, assuming that I want to use the wireless network on my PC instead of Lan, is it necessary to upgrade a network card to 500 mbps? I'm using a 300 mbps one now..

I highly doubt the speed can reach above 300 mbps but wondering would a 500 mbps network card improve the speed?

Bought a two piece set of M5 and was a little disappointed with the range / Internet strength. It doesn't go through the walls as good as I thought they would be. And the strength goes down quite drastically as I move further away from the router (although with zero obstruction)

I'm on Time 500 Mbps, when I run Speedtest on my phone on 2.4ghz band, I get the following:-
- around 110 mbps when I stand right beside it
- around 50 mbps when I stand 10 metres from it

Silly question, is the cable connecting the M5 to the Router, a standard Lan cable? I tried to swap it with another longer Lan cable of mine but I can't get the M5 working... Have to switch it back to the default cable..
