photos taken in the airport, please use tripod or faster shutter speed. I'm surprised the camera didn't warn you that your photo would be blur. I heard it was intelligent.

4 and 5, composition could be better. try not to put the roof tops in the centre. go for one third of the frame. more sky or more of the building. No 5, the plant didn't help at all, just cluttered your shot.

no. 6, bad composition. also can't see where your main subject is. too cluttered. try for smaller aperture to get the whole plant in focus. or else just shoot beyond the plant and get the pool in focus.

no.7, background too cluttered. and the composition for the plant/flower could be better. just try to focus only on the flower.

8 and 9, lost of contrast. You overexposed the photo. Also, composition not as good.

no. 10, bad composition as well. What were you trying to show? also, please use a tripod. it's blur.

overall, average, is usual for new users of dslr to produce these kind of photos. practice more.

Yeah pictures 3, 6, 8 and 9 seem to be out of focus. In your signature, you are using a SB800 and I am sure the flash could have been used a little more efficiently to expose the flowers in picture 5.

Keep up the good work and continue to play around with your equipment.

I stilla noobie photographer btw, so we all do learn frm each other right?

When i take photographs, i always group into a theme, for instance when i post over the thread, i will organize them as one theme so ppl will get an understanding on what i taking.

Well i think u better learn up ur composition. That important. wink.gif

AlamakLor is very sensitive to bending, from LCD to photos to lens smile.gif

I like the composition of second photo, but it's slightly over exposed, but I guess this can be easily fixed. The exposure shall like the first photo.

not bad... noticed the less distracting watermark! biggrin.gif

noticed lots of sky in your recent pictures as well... a CPL filter will help your images...

lastly noticed your theme is mostly towards architecture/scenery... (which is strange since your wishlist has so many wide lens but not a wide-ANGLE lens?)

try an ultra wide-angle lens... i just got a Tokina wideangle a few days back and it certainly lends new perspective... (although you can't AF the Tokina with the D40)... nod.gif

i m not sure myself actually...lemme check the raw....
ok checked the raw...
i guess its the compression...
i used pictureproject to convert to jpg....then further compressed after adding my watermark...so i guess it's the flaw from my work flow...

Tough to get the right moment where the background lighting has to be bright enough so that the foreground person or subject will turn out as a silhouette.

Metering the sunrise or sunset will usually set all other subjects to dark silhouette. That's how I do that with multi-metering.

Multi-metering is the generic term where the whole frame is calculated for the proper exposure.

All brands have their own special name to it. Like Nikon's 3D Matrix Metering, Canon's Evaluative Metering, Sony's Multi-Segment Metering, Olympus' ESP Multi-Pattern Metering, etc.

You might want to have a longer exposure since you are shooting at f8. Unless you do a soft fill-in flash for the flower.

Photos seem to not show the true potentials of your new lens. Photos doesn't look sharp.

Colors are very mild as well.

the sharpness...it's the dof...i have a very small depth to play with...will improve more soon...still playing arnd with it...

Maybe you should get a monitor calibration device. Like a ColorVision Spyder2Express. It calibrates your monitor to true colors and the color profile can be used in photoshop as well. So when you edit your photos, anywhere, the color should be the same.

hey xandman, i can see that you have a d40 with a 50mm f/1.8.

from your experience,
izzit tedious to focus your subject manually?
how often do you have your subject out of focus if you do that?

cos i'm planning to get either the 350d with canon's 50mm or the d40 with nikkor 50mm and this issue is the one that decide whether i should get either of them.

Not too bad but still as mentioned earlier, the DoF is too shallow especially when it comes to product/food photography. The newer backgrounds are much better but because the DoF is too shallow, it doesn't really help blend the subject in.

went through ur photos from page 1 till 5... u certainly have come a long way - referring to the first attempt in food photog. i didn't like the cupcakes. too grainy and colours just didn't sit well for me...
however, the bowl of soup thingy and that cheapskace or whatever-you-call-it place - that, THAT is lovely.

i think you need to view more portraits photos, just to get an idea how.
once you see enough of them it shouldnt be a problem when brainstorming
a pose. dont be shy with your model, praise her and show them your shots
so they'll feel more comfortable posing for you next time ( taken
from photoplus mag ahaha )

hope this helps!

haha.. i can see that coming.. strobist style, the light source comes from the right. so, you're using a wireless transmitter huh?

a diffuser filter will make your picture a bit soft, dreamy-like.. i used to own that, but sold it off since photoshop can already do that effect.

imagine a glowy gaussian blur over the portrait.

for the trigger on that day we used 2 different trigger...
1 is the one that came with the battery strobe...a 600w strobe...
the 2nd method is cls...
using built in commander with sb-800 shot into soft silver umbrella...

cls is not so bad outdoors afterall...=)
