We've been misled by the extravagant costumes of Chinese dramas whether Taiwan, HK or mainland productions, where even the beggars are fat n wear clean new clothes.
Let's look at some real photos of commoners in those days. Of course where the photos are posed the people dressed up for the photos as it's not as easy as today to hv photos taken. And such photos are of relatively well off commoners.
Poor folks

No beautiful lady and handsome young man last time. Maybe the geographical (yunnan and northern people), diet, etc. Pic from 1930/ww2 era is different, can see beauty and handsome lad.
Everywhere have their poor and their rich. What I'm saying is at least they don't have shit all over the road. Europe was so bad until carts and wagons pulled by horses can't even move and got stuck due to how much shit is on the road.
Indeed I hv read of that.
But my guess is that old China must hv areas piled with excrement too except there's no photos of that.
After all the poor n beggars probably pooped in the streets too n the richer had theirs thrown out onto the streets as well.
Old cameras needed quite long exposure time, probably no one wanted to remain in or close to piles of excrement to take photos. Haha
Further, it's harder to see specific details in b&w photos n it's not HD quality. What u see as a shadow or rock on the ground may well be shit.

Meanwhile in China only emperor are rich and others are filth poor.
This is Not true.
Below the Emperor u hv the nobles who were either nobles by birth or were granted titles for service to the country, some titles hereditary some not.
Then u hv a class of officials who may be nobles as well. Of course some official appointments are more prestigious n hv more opportunities to make money.
Below that there's the merchant class who may hv lots of money but status is below officials.
You may not be aware but no matter how much money a merchant has, he still had to adhere to the social rules which determined every aspect of life eg how many concubines u can hv, wat material u can wear, how many horses + type+color to draw yr carriage, how many slaves /servants u can hv, wat yr wife + daughters can wear, type of jewellery + gemstones etc.
So status was v important n anyone can try to improve one's status by education. It was the only way one can elevate oneself n family. This is a major reason Chinese emphasize heavily on education.
If you are educated u are respected; more so than if you only hv money.
Of course the world has changed even for Chinese, many now think money is more important than anything else.
Title of this vid is "kids of prosperous families"
