Hi guys I just got my honda city a month ago.
It is the faceifted version so it has paddle shifters.

When I read online, people say if its in gear D, you can just paddleshift to a lower gear to overtake for a short moment before it goes back to normal D. If it's in gear S then it will stay in manual mode when you paddle shift until you switch gear. Is that correct?

So just now when I try to paddle downshift at a speed of 50-60kmph, the gear shows its at D1!! Shouldnt it be at gear 3 maybe? Gear 1 at 60kmph sounds scary to me but thats what CVT chose for me lah when I downshift. However, the car indeed gained a lot of power. Is this gonna cause any damage to the car or is it okay?

Another thing is are we supposed to lift the foot from the accelerator when we paddle shift? Or is it okay to to foot the pedal and downshift?

Thanks for any help in advance!

What was the engine rpm at "D1"? A cvt doesn't have actual gears, what you're getting is virtual ratios selected by the computer. Anyway, for cvt's, I think pedal shifters are not really necessary. Just flooring it will achieve the same effect.

Paddle shifters kinda useless for CVT or AT. Damn good with AMT or DSG.

Hi I dont think the rpm was high I think about 3k - 5k only but it did give off a pretty good push forward. Yeah I heard the S mode is better but was just trying out to see if the shifters are good enough for a short period of overtaking.

I'll probably try it again when I get on the wheel later cause I definitely feel more energy by shifting in D which is good enough for overtaking.

Thanks for the reply mate

Yeah yeah it should be really useful when you have something other than cvt to work with haha but still its always better to have it than not 😂

actually it's quite useful. u can 'downshift' without flooring the paddle..u have a better control of the engine speed.

Paddle shift not really used for daily driving except when you need to do an overtaking maneuver, hill climb or some spirited driving on twisty roads.
Basically the time where you need the car engine to maintain a certain RPM range.

When you downshift it depends on what gear the car was in as selected by the PCM for that current driving condition. So if you just accelerated to 50-60km/h and in D2, of course when you downshift it will go to D1. If you already cruising at 50-60km/h in D4 then when you downshift you get D3. You get the idea.

No right or wrong answers to lift or not to lift. It depends on the driving situation and how often you're using it.
Honda City is not a sports car ok.

I don't think 5k is that over lah cause I kinda floored it after downshifting but I was worried also lah cause normally its like 2-3k haha

Okay okay that makes sense cause I was accelerating from a stop so it should have still been in D2.
Yeah just wanna know my own car better haha so if its needed I know how to get some power out of it haha
But I notice if I dont have my foot on the accelerator when I downshift it doesn't give me the power somehow confused.gif

Having driven the latest non-hybrid City and Jazz before, I'd say the paddles shifters are not necessary for both cars.

The Honda CVTs have a brilliant shift logic which I'm too lazy to describe here, but suffice to say, the driver can easily use the throttle to control the RPM for overtaking maneuvers, within the capabilities of the engine, of course. The driver just need to learn how to take advantage of it, if in doubt, just put your foot down. Paddle shifters are not needed.

Of course, if you lift your foot off the accelerator, the throttle plate is closed, no air, fuel cut, no ignition, no power lah...

Downshift to increase speed, upshift to slow down? How long usually is the effect before it goes back to the 'normal' gear?

even in S mode, the car will not upshift for you, that's where you can roar your car.

but as you slow down, the car will automatically downshift for you, as to protect your gearbox.
