Hi. I'm gonna be building a new system soon and I figured I better run everything to see if it works before fixing everything in the casing. I know this is poosible as I have seen it before. Just curious about what precautions need to be taken. I know that the mobo needs to be placed on some kinda insulator, usually people use the anti-static foam that comes with it right? What about the power supply? Does it need to be grounded? And how do I get the comp to start up without the switch that comes on the case?

The insulator is just to prevent any sort of short circuit which can occur (for example if you put the motherboard directly on a surface which might conduct electricity or can have a lot of static discharge (carpets, rugs). To start the PC without using the plug, basically just short the two pins of the connector because that is what the switch does. Shorting the circuit to turn on the motherboard.

Ok.....meaning I can just leave the power supply on the floor or table as well? And to start it, correct me if I'm wrong but all I gotta do is put a jumper on these 2 pins right?

nuh, no need a jumper, something metal like screw driver will do.....just simply use the head of the screw driver to touch the 2 pins will do.... its fun when i 1st did that...

yes and no....
yes use those 2 pins...but DO NOT use a jumper... what u need is to just TEMPORARILY touch them and it should turn on.....usually a quick contact between the 2 pins would be sufficient. once its on there should be NO contact between those 2 pins

Ok thanks for clearing that up because I read somewhere else that you gotta use a jumper. Lucky I double checked How about the other parts like hard drive and disk drive? I guess they can be just left on the table or something right? This post has been edited by joe_star: May 24 2007, 04:48 PM

I used to have a PC without a case, The only 2 problems were I had to keep My eyes Open to d dust all the time, basically It easily went to every single part of the hardwares, And I also could feel the heat from the Pc especially When I got the air-con Off In my room...
Despite all the major problems, the only thing I liked was I could easily change the hardwares And turn everything into d different angles

Overall, Running a System of PC without the case is very useless and dangerous... I got a friend who also did like this, what happened was Suddenly the system cudnt boot at all due to something and once a time His finger got hurt by the Cpu fan.... I dont mean to stress up anything here, But I jus wanna share my friend's experience to y'all and Pls dnt get offended by my statements or everything, Iam just a newbie who wants to get involved in to the discussions and Also I wanna try to be active in this forum since I ve found this very interesting to see.

from my point of view, i think it depend to the user. if dont want casing, higher precaution should be taken. otherwise, "Dont try this at home. Leave the danger to us" ( taken from WWE )

Everything comes with a price. As for me, I have run naked system for like 4 years or so, so far didn't encounter any disaster YET. Haha. What I like with naked system is easy installation/changing of hardwares, and max air, not to say heat get blown off faster as well. Still very much depends on user's perspective.
I do like to have a nice casing as well, if only I get myself a WC kit that is, don't wish to run hot inside casing.

I think any type of rack is usable as long as you customize it to fit a PC. Unless you want those ready-made customized PC racks but it depends on what do you mean by rack?

i tried using a naked pc...it's better and cooler..but one thing is my room is messy + the naked computer = more messy...i got put a sponge under the mobo...the hard thing to on it is to temporary connect the power pins...because my mobo dont have the label for it...then theres once my finger got hurt from the hsf fan...
i fix my comp like that when i wash my casing...but when my casing dry liao i lazy to put back...there are a few questions i want to ask here...
issit ok to stack the hdd above each other? same goes to cdrom...
