QUOTE(Lord Suave @ Dec 2 2019, 12:10 PM)
seeking some guidance, i am a big size guy with weight of a landwhale, i have lost 10kg over the last two months and would like to venture into cycling and was advised that normal bikes would not be suitable to support my weight...

is there any shop that i could step in to get guidance as the last thing i want to do is spend so much and end up keeping the bike collecting dust...

RB, MTB, Foldie, all can support your weight depending on brands and models. Please do check frame and wheelset specification for the maximum supported weight. Best to ride the same type of bike that your closest bike group within your neighborhood does then at least you know that they will keep bugging you every Saturday or Sunday morning for a ride and you have no excuse not to jump out of the bed.

Guys,
Have anyone tried ordering wheelsets from online store eq CRC, Wiggle, and delivered to Malaysia?
Does the wheels (for roadbike), gets taxed? Ifyes, how much percentage of the imported value?

out of fear that i cant ride the bike i buy without proper research/knowledge, i am seriously a noob when it comes to cycling and if my fata$$ hurts due to wrong bike type etc i might be demotivated to continue riding, thus was seeking some brick and mortar recommendations so that i could get proper advise

there is no such thing as a specific bike type for a specific body size

just that certain road frames and wheelsets have weight limit.

usually roadbike wheelsets have weight limit at 110kg. but manufacturers do make stronger versions for heavier riders.
i havent been up to date on newer products so others might have different info.
HED used to make two versions for each model.
and check out specialized https://rovalcomponents.com/pages/frequently-asked-questions

frames usually dont have weight limit. only very few models have weight limit but that's to allow manufacturers to come up with ultra light frames for weightweenies

don't worry this much, manufacturers of certain super light weight frames usually state a limit of 100kg and the others do not have it.

It's unlikely that the frame shatters should one exceeds the weight limit because(I think) the load that the frame of the bike takes when being ridden by professionals cyclists are multiple times heavier in a race than us weekend warriors, easily.

Nope but I just gave my opinion and based on what I’ve heard from the fraternity, it’s up to you to decide where you lean towards

I've been using Look Keo blade since the first generation(the 1 with the thin carbon blade) and it has not been giving me any problems since then and that was 4-5years ago

Guess it’s doing its job properly either look or shimano. Been using shimano for awhile before switching to garmin (exustar) with look cleat and it works pretty much the same to me

i prefer shimano pedals because it's easy to service on my own, requires no special tool, and can adjust the bearing because it's cone n cup type.

I've seen a few riders with that size- it is not easy but if there is a will- there is away.
Saddle sore might be the issue- so get a suitable saddle and do good fitting. It need to be level to ground as understand

Denai alam is good place to ride- venture around taman, or cross over to Elmina.
Else drop to GCE toward langgong- the area is pretty flat and give you a good loop on 30km

I'm pretty sure some had but is hesitant to give you an answer because of the intricacies of how one gets taxed and how one avoids which I am sure some of us here do try to do that.

That said, the savings aren't likely to be substantial, if there is going to be any, because most WS here in LBS are dirt cheap as compared to what you get online.

Even if you can save RM100 which I can say is, not a small amount but chances of you evading tax is minimal and as to how much are you going to get taxed, if you wish to get an unequivocal answer, the best would be for you to call the pertinent officials.
