Hi all sifus,

New member here at the rB section.

Im a beginner for RB, but have been riding awhile on MTB or Foldies. Not hardcore or avid, but more on frequent casual short rides.

Seeking for info on what decent budget alloy wheelset to look for..budget say around RM1500 and below, new or old, that performs better than my stock Axis wheelset.
My ride is currently an older Allez Comp 2014 model.

Can you point me which pages to read for, or any suggestions for my case?.
Been reading a bit on the Fulcrums 5 LG and 3 tho.

Get a used fulcrum racing zero. One of the member here is selling his slightly above 1.5k.

Thx KCTY for the heads up.

Anyone has the experience of the Novatec Jetfly wheelset, seem to get positive reviews in the net. Price quite attractive for a new set.

Hi all,

Any Wheelset sifu can advice me on a wheelset.

Im interested in a used older American Classic 420 Aero 3 Alu wheelset.
But the rim is narrow, not exactly sure bout the inner width, but lesser than wider norm 17C for sure.

Is there anyone who tried running them with wider 25mm tires, and apart from probably balloon look..any issues ?

Any advice will be appreciated.

AC 420 Aero 3 is a great wheels. Used them for 3 years and bomb proof. Very light for an alu wheelset
*
Any problem servicing them or parts..since Ac has closed down.
Does the hubs easily serviceable by LBS?

Never changed part before. Serviced it with H2C Ampang, the same place where i got it. It was about 6 years ago when I have it, so... it was still ok. Not sure about now though.
*
Have u tried with wider 25mm tires, and does it looks very balloon or lightbulb as they called it?
Probably 6 years ago, there wasnt 25mm or not popular.

From Miaopurr article, i know now it can fit and works on the narrow inner bed.

Another advice needed,

Shall i be still looking at these older gen alloys, or shall i go for new cheap Carbons below Rm2k range ...like those from Prolites, SuperTeam. and etc.

Getting carbon wheel at that price point will end up with cheap hubs with bearing breaking after a year (two of my cycling bud's superteam just changed bearing).
Even with carbon they don't weight light either, 1.7+1.8kg for carbon wheel? Rm2k can get u good alloy at the same or lighter weight with better hubs! And reliable braking.

A lot of time we get blinded by price point and dump reliability aside.

Surprisingly, HUNT (uk) also falls into the "cheap china" wheel catagory after I inspect my friend hunt, it's build with Taiwan cheap parts! His bearing and freehub pawl(suspect novatec) a bit worn off after 400km only. I felt he was dupe by HUNT.
*
Thx for the advice..i will be going for Alloy then. Concern bout those horror stories of Cheap Carbon wheels exploded or rupture during high speed..not sure if those are true or not..

Few of my choices so far:

1) Used American Classic 420 Aero 3
2) Used Zonda / Fulcrum Racing 3
3) New Fulcrum Quattro LG
4) Used Novated Jetfly ( good net reviews but nobody seem to know bout it)
5) Used Mavic SLE Exalith ( condition good but price at RM2k, worth it??)
6) New Mavic Kryserium Elites
7) Prolite C50 Carbon wheels ( thrown in for opinion seeking)

Thats bout all im looking at for thr price range of <RM2k, and i kinda prefer a bit aero like 30mm profile>

One more thing, now that rims gets wider, to make tires run wider ( a fitted 25mm become like 28mm)..does it really noticaeble impact? or its all just mktg talk?

1) Used American Classic 420 Aero 3 u will cry when u start hunt for a freehub spare, my opinion stay away from the brand until some company pick them back up

If hubs are koyak or parts unavailable, can we go the option of replacing with hubs of other brand? What about spoke lacing with existing rims? Im thinking since many wheels have custom spokes pattern and count, is this an issue when it comes to just replace hubs?

Hi mates,

Not a rb question, but can anyone suggest a bike shop that has good mechanics to install MTB tubeless setup. Im asking for a beginner friend who just bought a new TR MTB wheelset, but a few bike shops, around PJ area, none seem to be interested in setting it up, with various reasons like mechanic N/A, no sealant, too busy etc...
Even the shop that he buys from doesnt have mechanics around..what is going on with bike shops in KL, PJ...only sell stuffs but dont do much servicing?

Hi all,

Need some advice or experience shared.

My friend who is staying in Australia, wants to bring his Roadbike back for holidays in Malaysia.

But he is concerned it might be taxed, or levied duties for that.
The last round he brought back did encounter some problems with Customs guys, but was let off.

I did heard that roadbike is zero tax, but can't find any concrete proof on this matter.

Do you have any experience on this or can advise how to go about?

Thanks mates.

Another question need opinion,

Im looking at Samsung Galaxy Active 2 watch, and thought would like to use it for cycling.

I do use dedicated GPS, but its more for my partner.

Does any have experience with Samsung Smartwatches on cycling, like does the screen is constant on and visible showing the speed?
It will be quite pointless for cycling use, if it doesnt shows real time visible speed.

Thanks.

for speed then i think the watch a bit susah la, need to glance at the wrist
but few of my friend using sportswatch also, 2 garmin and 1 amazfit
but the reading is slightly difrent from the gps mounted on bike
distance slightly but the elevation memang beza a lot, i dont kno how they calibrate it
*
Yeah, i recognized there will be some leceh, to read from the wrist, but do they actually shows real time speed during the ride, instead of need to wake them up by hand gesture of sorts, to be able to read. From the google i read, samsung galaxy watch actually be dimmed out during recording..im not entirely certain...which kinda defeat the purpose. Call to samsung hotline didn't provide any satisfactory answer either. Thus seeking any real life user experience

I m using samsung watch..first of all, not easy to read the screen while riding..even with raise to wake enabled..coz sometimes not waking up..also dangerous to raise ur hand and read the reading on it tiny screen..it can show speed and current distance but cannot pair cadence sensor..unlike a dedicated bike comp like bryton, garmin or wahoo..
Slowly add 20km to ur regular ride until 100km..like each 2 weeks increase 20km..i did my 140km on my 4th month of cycling too..
*
Ah Ping ko,

Even with Always On, still need to wake it?

Definitely wont replace the dedicated comp, but wondering if its actually usable for riding, to show real time speed.
if it needs to be woken up during riding....then its practically useless for cycling speed viewing on the fly.

Thanks all for the advice and info on the import duties.

Was just curious on this aspect for high value items...as i have been buying a few times from these sites without taxes, as my purchases are below Rm500.

In terms of savings, yes, by a lot for certain clearance items. Also availability and sizes, which sometimes local shops doesnt stock them..especially non popular items, old stocks or abnormal small sizes.

If tax was levied severely, then probably no savings. That's why i was looking for past experience from fellow forumers.

What sort of items did you buy under 500 that constituted a lot of savings by buying online?

How much did you save
*
At least 50%.

The last few items i bought that :

Shimano RT4 Touring Shoe = RM 130. Locally Rm 400+/- and without the size i want ( Size S for wife)

Lazer Z1 Helmet = RM 210 size S..Locally roughly u know the prizes.

Xtools Bike Servicing Stand = Rm300+ ..Local around rm 400-500. (Provided u find it)

Normally its those odd sizes that i tend to find good deals which they do clearance.

The item i was looking at currently was Campagnolo Bullet Ultra Wheeset ( which i felt good deal during Black Friday) Rm3800+ with free GP5000 tires.
This is the one that got me concern about the taxes.
