PC Gamer has gone up with impressions from the E3 2018 behind closed doors demo of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, the newly announced From Software title published by Activision, which provides new information about the next big game from the creators of Dark Souls.

Here are the tidbits:

-Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is set in a reimagining of 1500s Sengoku era Japan. You play as an unnamed shinobi, tasked with protecting a young lord of mystical lineage, who is left for dead when a powerful samurai attacks and chops off his arm.

-It is an action adventure game, not an RPG. There are no stats, armor, weapons, classes, or multiplayer. But there are “Prosthetic Attachments” that you earn as you explore, which can be attached to the “Shinobi Prosthetic” that replaces your hand and help you progress.

-While the protagonist wields a katana in his right hand, the prosthetic arm that constitutes his left can be attached with various offensive and supportive tools. An axe add-on can destroy an enemy’s shield; a firecracker can stun enemies; a torch can set them ablaze; and a shield can block attacks. These tools can be combined with the katana. For example, you can thrust the katana through the torch arm to set the katana on fire.

-Environments are built vertically. You can use a grappling hook to reach cliffs, rooftops, and more. Based on PC Gamer’s impressions, the grappling hook is not locked to specific grapple points. It can also be used in combat to pull in enemies or get behind them.

-Combat is based around posture. Enemies can easily block attacks, but will gradually lose posture. Once lowered enough, you can finish them with a “Shinobi Death Blow.” However, you will also lose posture as you are attacked, unless you block perfectly—which doing will cause the enemy to lose posture instead.

-The Kanji symbols that sometimes appear above the character’s head serve different functions. A danger symbol, for example, signals that the enemy is about to use a special attack.
Knowing what the incoming attack is and how to avoid it requires reading the enemy’s animations. Enemies will have patterns of attack. Some enemies can use sweep attacks to knock you down that cannot be blocked, but can be avoided with the jump button.

-The game’s “light stealth mechanics” include instant stealth kills, pressing up against walls, hanging off ledges, and crouching in grass to stay hidden. You will be able to finish off any enemy that comes close when hidden.

-You can approach situations in various ways. For example, in one situation a woman would alert the guards if she spotted you. So you can kill her to remain safe.

-The boss battle of the demo is the Corrupted Monk, who is a large woman with a naginata. Her attacks can be predicted and dodged or blocked with the help of the Kanji characters that appear above the player’s head.

-When you die, you can revive immediately and return to combat. Though dying causes enemies to immediately lose interest in you and return to what they were doing. That said, you can use death as an “opportunity” to surprise and kill enemies who were not expecting you to revive. However, there is a limit to how many times you can revive.

-Sekiro has an expansive and interconnected world that players are free to explore.

-Many gameplay scenes will involve “cat and mouse” segments with large monsters. For example, in the demo the player had to wait for moments when the large snake monster that appeared in the trailer was not looking to make his move to traverse a canyon. PC Gamer describes these as appearing more along the lines of environmental puzzles than traditional boss fights.

-There is a currency system, but it is different from the Souls and Blood Echoes systems of Dark Souls and Bloodborne. It is used for some sort of upgrade system for your gear.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is due out for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in early 2019.

finally a pure action game without RPG stat? thumbup.gif

I assumed you never played any of the Souls series before?

general consensuses are it's easier than previous Soul series tongue.gif

watched a few game play vids, similar difficulty than the previous Soul series, but it seems more forgiving wink.gif

Nope played thru demon souls, all three dark souls and bloodborne and yet still got my ass kicked

If you think you can play roll and attack like the souls series you are pretty much screwed lol, you need to master deflecting in this one. The combat is more personal and engaging since you need to focus and know when to attack, deflect, jump and step out, one wrong move and your dead, no more grinding and over level.

It may control like the souls series but the gameplay is different enough to differentiate itself from the souls series

Cant wait to play again after work smile.gif

Very disappointed that nearly 4 years later, From still cannot figure out how to do 30fps with no frame pacing issues.

For PS4 Pro owners, framerate is unlocked but fluctuates wildly from 40s to 50s, very inconsistent. Why not just give us a 1080p60 mode like Nioh?

Such a shame.

I guess if you're used to parry and don't rely much on hugeshield block the transition is a bit easier. Some trash mobs are really easy to deal with but once they gang up kind of hard to get through one by one. Maybe need to unlock some crowd control skills.

Game is harder only because it's a new system. Well not really new depending where you came from, like if you played Onimusha and is familiar with the 'issen' technique, it's basically the same thing here except the deflect timing is much more leniant.

Royal guarding in DMC5 for the past 2+ weeks only made deflecting stupidly easy in this game for me. Only thing have to figure out are the unblockables which requires either Mikiri counter or jumping above head for an aerial attack.

this game is hard, not die twice but countless times. When you first encounter the enemy bosses is hard to parry attack, most of the time you get surprise and die.

It's basically Tenchu x Dark Souls.

Game was suppose to be a Tenchu game at the start but then turned to something else in the end. Interesting really.

Sekiro is way harder if you ask me. Demon's Soul was only hard back in the day because the framerate was atrocious, the AI was cheap for the sake of being "challenging" (but easily cheese-able) and because it's a game that was first of its kind during that generation. Demon's Soul wasn't hard at all once you understand the simple combat mechanics of the game.

Sekiro has a lot more depth and is more open ended. Unlike in Demon's Soul where enemies use pretty much the same moveset (other than the bosses) and that most of them are same-ish, Sekiro has a lot more varied enemies with different movesets that you have to learn, which you can then get into the rhythm of deflecting.

Once you unlock the skill where it give you HP after a successful deathblow, then it becomes much easier.

Just bulldoze deathblow when get grouped up, you're invulnerable throughout the animation.

Tips: You can circle her and dash+attack. This can stunlock her

2nd stage, you don't need the snap seed. run and hide behind pillars when she spams you with the ghost attacks

Huh? It doesn't matter which mini boss you fight first. Regardless of the boss - it doesn't matter as long as you perfect deflect everything and yes you can deflect EVERYTHING in the game EXCEPT for "Perilous" attacks.

There's no "high" level mini boss or any "level" for that matter. Level stats don't exist in the game.

ur should realize high lvl mini boss would chunk up a lot of ur posture meter even with successful deflection. that why prayer bead exists in the game to increase ur vitality and posture meter......

@bolded
It doesn't lol. You simply didn't perfect deflect if you're suffering high posture damage. There's a difference between perfect deflect and normal deflect (which acts like a block), I think you're mistaken.

Already finished the game twice, I literally could just run through the game without upgrades and there's almost difference. Levels DON'T exist, why do you keep bringing up "high level" bosses? Enemies have no levels, neither do you.

Console versions suck because FS can't get their shit together. 40-50fps inconsistency on PS4 Pro, 30fps with shitty framepacing on standard PS4. It makes so many fights harder than it should be.

Playing on PC, liquid smooth 120fps with a mod or the standard locked 60fps makes the game so, so, good. Deflecting attacks is just so addicting, it feels AMAZING. Really feel bad for the console versions and those stuck on consoles, the combat is just so much better at 60fps or higher.

As for keyboard and mouse... dude, you know you can just plug a controller into your PC right?

As for keyboard and mouse... dude, you know you can just plug a controller into your PC right?

yea that is why i ask about the controls part. so controllers still better than keyboard and mouse then for this game?

I'm a big believer of use whatever peripherals that is most natural to you for the game you're playing.

Logically speaking, yes controllers are better. But who's to say K+M isn't good? It's a peripheral after all, so it's simply down to preference at the end of the day.

Best place will be AFTER you finish the fountainhead quest. Slight spoiler alert but google Sekiro Stairway grind once you finish fountainhead

For now if you are in Fountainhead...pay attention to Flower Viewing Stage idol. Quite a decent place to grind. It will be near mid of the fountainhead area

General tips: don’t get greedy. Slowly chip away his Hp before you go for parry. Firecracker can help.

Phase 1: Bait Isshin to do dash and cross slash attack. Dodge/run away from it and then attack him one or twice. Slowly chip away his health. Once his health is reduced to acceptable level, you can start to parry him to kill him.

Phase 2: Be ready to run around (but don’t jump off the cliff). Bait his jump attack. Dodged to side and you should get one or two hits. Once comfortable you can try to parry his sword and spear combo that ends with a thrust. Mikiri Counter it. Isshin hits like a truck and very aggressive. Unless you are very confident with your parry skills, be patience and hit once or twice will do. Don’t forget to guard against his firearms.

Phase 3: same as 2 but this time he has lightning attacks. Be ready to jump and lightning reverse it. Will get a few free hits and posture damage. But careful, if you failed the reversal he will kill you very quickly.

Sword saint is a very fun boss. He will test your patience and very exciting to fight. Ironically I had more trouble with Genichirou. Can’t quite get the dodge timing of his mortal draw down. Always wasted two or more gourd there.

Older Isshin is harder for me. Those fire attacks are crazy.

You can actually prevent Isshin from ever taking out his spear in phase 2 if you just stick next to him and be aggressive with your attacks, of course deflect and mikiri his unblockables too at the same time.

It's still possible to prevent him from taking out his spear in phase 3 as well, but quite a bit harder.

Key is to stay close to him.

u mean the jump attack when u are healing or when he jump backwards with his spear swipe?

when u heal, u need to go far far away to heal or else he will jump attack on u. but sometimes i will use this as a bait to get close to him so when he almost land his attack, just dodge to the left (by the time u will certainly finish drinking your gourd) and u will have 2 free hits on him.

if u say when he jump back with his spear swipe, u need to anticipate that. always ready to block after 2 hits. and most often after he jump back with spear swipe, he will follow up with a gun shot 4 times (can block easily), and then a thrust which u can mikiri counter it easily.

good luck.

finally got the Dragon Homecoming trophy. After more than 30 tries for sword saint. Feel so easy and predictable after get used to the timing.

Well my words for new comers, patience is virtue. Many youtuber rage and gave up the game but they forgot the word "忍"

90/100 rating for this game, camera sucks thou.

Also theres no need to collect any item, can just blitz through, even the minibosses serve no purpose anymore.
