Initially I wanted to try on free Hitfilm Express which is great for special effect.

Before I began to learn it, I changed my mind and adopted Davinci Resolve (v.15). Which ended up pretty worth it.

Latest one is v.16 which has a slightly easier quick edit page.

What I like about Davinci: Its free! And very powerful. It focuses a lot on Colour correction and mod. Just learn about 30-40% of its function will be sufficient to make a decent home video. (I am using it just for home video actually).

What I don't like : Its actually quite hard to learn for a beginner. However there are tonnes of youtube video from the pro to teach beginners in many various aspect of video editing on Davinci.

It took me about a few months for me to finish editing my own travel home video. Time also included the learning phase that I need to go through amidst my busy work schedule and family time. But this is one free editing software that if you learn it, it will be the sky's the limit. Its well worth the time and effort.

Sorry I need to add that Davinci Resolve needs a fast computer with good amount of memory to make it effective. I actually have to upgrade my existing i3 intel chip to a used i7 before I can embark on the project. My Ram stays at 8GB. For colour correction, it helps to have a relatively good monitor with accurate colour reproduction.

All that for a home video. doh.gif

I saw this blog post sometime ago and forgot where i saved it.
Now that i have found them.
Here's a few list of video editing from paid/monthly subscription to free
with their views on advantage/disadvantage

https://www.techradar.com/au/best/best-vide...re-premium-free

*i personally had been from Premiere to FCP , back to premiere and pair with Resolve just for color grading.
And now on Davinci Resolve exclusively

Is there an alternative to davinci reslove? Free to use and as good as that?

That will be hitfilm express, which has free version as well. Both require quite a considerable learning curve.

I used to use Windows Movie maker as well when it was free. Its no longer available now in free form unfortunately.

Wondershare Filmora is a nice step-up from Windows Movie Maker. It has all the more advanced cut and paste options, and some cool texts, effects & transitions to add to your video.

Im using it for fast video editing. If you need a software that super simple to learn then go for powedirector. Sometimes it will be on sales through Steam. I purchased. For advance editing It's not a versatile software.

I use it even for advanced one. What software do you use for it?
