Dunno how they came to this number, but according to Wiki the Malaysian Army has 90,000 active troops and 200,000 reserve troops as of 2017.

Which I doubt somehow. laugh.gif

It's more complicated than that. Mostly bcoz the military is given too many limits to make sure the war wouldn't spread and involve China and Russia.

I'm sure if the US military was given a free hand in Vietnam, they would've won easily, no questions asked.

I think the army should relax on the physical rules to allow more people to join. I'd join the army but I can't swim, didn't join any sports during school and I wear glasses. sad.gif

No, i mean policy-wise. I'll try and give a few.

For example:

1) The Soviet Union supplied and operated the new SA-2 SAM systems used by North Vietnam. For the time, the missile was very advanced and shot down a lot of US military planes bombing North Vietnam. Now, this would make you think that this fact should have made the missile complexes target #1 before any bombing operations can begin, but US leaders forbade any attack on the SA-2 missile complexes, for fearing it can possibly kill Soviet missile operators and draw in the Soviets into the war proper. So the SA-2s can shoot down US planes at will.

2) The North Vietnamese Air Force had many Chinese and Soviet 'volunteer' pilots flying its fighter planes. Due to avoid any unnecessary Chinese and Soviet pilots getting killed and drawing both countries into the war, US fighter planes escorting the bombers into North Vietnam had very strict Rules of Engagements (ROE) that forbade them to actively engaging North Vietnamese fighter planes outside of their protection envelope. This meant that North Vietnamese fighter planes can gather their forces at the most tactically advantageous positions just outside the US protection envelope unmolested before swooping in and striking the US planes at any moment of their choosing.

3) US troop operations are to be limited in scope to the defence of South Vietnam only, with the ground interdiction of enemy movements and supply lines outside of South Vietnamese borders is not (officially) allowed. As a result, it is estimated that in 1965, up to 150 tons of military supplies were transported along the Ho Chi Minh trail network in neighboring Laos and Cambodia into South Vietnam every day, practically unabated, despite the trail was being bombed by US and South Vietnamese planes at a rate of 1,000 sorties per month at the time.

I have heard the US Vietnam war experience as referred to as 'Fighting an enemy blindfolded, with one hand tied behind your back, while at the same time also being told to lie down on your stomach'. laugh.gif

but the number of the personnel who is retire and quit is also sometimes worrying
esp for specialist, headhunters comes at them with crazy offers

I think this is natural for military personnel anywhere in the world.

Many Generals already have confirmed lucrative chairmanship or CEO jobs when they retire.
